“Di. I don’t believe it. Tum mujhe shopping karne ke liye saath mein le kar aayi ho. Aur woh bhi street side bargain shops mein nahin, is mall mein?”

“Mujhe ek dhang ki dress chahiye Siddhi. Main kya karoon?”

“To main ye thode hi na kah rahi hoon ki tum kuchh galat kar rahi ho. Main to bas surpried hoon. Kuchh to change ho gaya hai tumme?”

“Achcha hai ya bura?”

“Jab tak mujhe bekaar mein daanto na, achchha hi hai.”

“Ek baar daanta tha, uske liye kya mujhe zindagi bhar taane milenge?”

“Nahin baba. Chalo. Kya khareedna hai tumhein?”

“Salwaar-kameez theek rahegi na? Dinner par jaane ke liye?”

“Haan. Chalo tumhein ek stylish si salwaar-kameez khareedwai jaye. Waise Di, ek baat poochhoon? Bura to nahin maanogi?”

“Kya?”

“Tum aur Dr. Ashutosh… Kuchh baat hai kya?”

“Zyada bak-bak mat kar Siddhi. Main bas… unki bahut respect karti hoon.”

“Okay. Nahin karti bak-bak. Maine to bas aise hi poochha. Chalo. Is shop mein chalte hain. Achchhe designs dikh rahe hain showcase mein.”

“Rahul? Tum yahan kaise?” Ashutosh was surprised to see Rahul in his office. He was still in his school-uniform.

“Sir. Main le aayi.”

“Kyon?”

“Aaj meri duty nahin thi, to main Siddhi ko lene chali gayi. Rahul ko dekh kar mujhe laga ki ise checkup ki zaroorat ho sakti hai.”

“Kya suspect kar rahi hain aap?”

“I hope I am wrong, lekin Sir… jaundice ho sakta hai.”

“Achcha kiya aap le aayin. Main bhi kal yahi soch raha tha. Lekin aaj checkup ke liye la nahin paya.”

“Koi baat nahin, Sir. Main samples dilwa deti hoon.”

“Okay. Thanks Nidhi.”

Nidhi’s and Ashutosh’ suspicions were correct. Rahul was suffering from jaundice and needed full bed rest for recovery apart from the medicines.

Ashutosh maintained outward calm, but Nidhi could sense that he was disturbed.

“Sir. Aap pareshaan kyon ho rahe hain? Bilkul early stages mein detect ho gaya hai. Zyada din nahin lagenage theek hone mein ise.”

“I know. As a doctor I know. But as a parent I don’t know how to manage. Something as simple as full bed-rest for someone as active as Rahul. It’s… going to be tough.”

“I know. Lekin aap ghabraiye mat. Jab bhi possible hoga, main uske saath rahoongi.”

“That’s very sweet of your Nidhi. Lekin aaple oopar already itni zimmedaariyan hain.”

“Aap chinta mat kijiye, Sir. Siddhi ab badi ho gayi hai. Itna samajhti hai. Aur woh bhi Rahul ko company de sakti hai ghar par. Of course, agar aapko aitraaz na ho.”

“Mujhe kyon aitraaz hoga? Lekin aap khud hi dhyaan rakhein ki aapki life disturb na ho.”

“Nahin hogi, Sir.”

“Chalo tumhari drawing book dekhte hain,” Nidhi proposed to engage Rahul.

“Okay. Main abhi laata hoon,”

“Tum mujhe bata do kahan hai, main le aati hoon. Tumhein zyada bhaagne-daudne ki manahi hai na.”

“Main kab theek hounga Nidhi Auntie?”

“Bahut jaldi. Abhi batao mujhe… Ye hai tumhari drawing book?” Nidhi pulled out a book from Rahul’s shelf.

“Haan. Wahi hai.”

Ashutosh stopped at the door and watched as Rahul walked her through the trees, cottages, rivers, sun, mangoes and other thing he had drawn.

He stiffened when he heard Rahul mention family, “Aur ye hai meri family.”

Nidhi was also awkward. She did not ask him any quetions like she did in earlier drawings. But Rahul went on, “Ye Papa. Ye Rahul. Aur ye… Meri Mummy to hain nahin. Lekin mere teacher ne aise hi drawing sikhayi hai.”

“Tum apni Mummy ko miss karte ho?” Nidhi could not help asking.

To her surprise, he shook her head, “Nahin. Mujhe Mummy ke baare mein kuchh yaad nahin hai. Lekin Mummy hoti to achchha hota.”

“Kyon?”

“Mummy hoti to mujhe beemaari mein akele nahin rahna padta. Papa hamesha nahin rahte.”

“Papa ko kaam hota hai na Rahul. Aur Mummy hoti to unhein bhi kaam par jaana hota,” Nidhi tried to reason with him.

“Sumit ki Mummy bhi kaam karti hain. Lekin jab uska accident hua tha to uske Papa ya Mummy mein se ek hamesha uske saath rahta tha.”

Nidhi got emotional and pulled him in a hug.

Ashutosh’ stiff expressions changed to those of worry on hearing Nidhi, “Agar main tumhare saath rahoon to?”

“Meri Mummy ki tarah?”

“Would you like that, Rahul?”

“Dr. Nidhi!” Ashutosh had to speak finally. Nidhi was startled. She looked at Ashutosh for a moment, then ran away from there. Ashutosh went to Rahul and asked after his health. Then he called his maid to be with him and went out to find Nidhi, hoping that she hadn’t left.

She hadn’t. She was pacing nervously in the hall. She stopped and stood still when she saw him. The expressions on her face gave nothing away.

“Kya kah rahi thi aap Rahul ko?”

She continued to stand still with downcast eyes and did not reply.

“Main kuchh poochh raha hoon tumse.”

Silence.

“Of all the people tum… tumhein pata hona chahiye ki ek broken family mein bachche ko bada karna kitna mushkil hota hai, kitne mushkil sawaalon ke jawaab dene padte hain, kitni mehnat karni padi hai ye ensure karne mein ki use kabhi apne baare mein, apne parivaar ke baare mein bura mahsoos na ho. Aur jahan tak ho saka hai maine ye sab karne ki koshish ki hai. I’m sorry. I’m sorry ki woh phir bhi in ghar mein Ma ki kami mahsoos karta hai. Lekin us kami se woh cope kar raha hai, Nidhi. Kyonki woh uski life ka hard truth hai. Lekin agar use koi sapna dikha diya, jo poora nahin hua, to usse woh cope nahin kar payega. Kyon dikha rahi ho aise impossible sapne use? Soch kya rahi thi tum?”

“Main… Sir… I am… sorry…” Nidhi mumbled quite scared by his outburst.

“Itna bhadda mazaak us bachche ke saath kaise kar sakti ho tum? Jaan chhidakta hai woh tum par.”

She finally looked up with her tear-filled eyes and met his for the first time during the conversation, “Main bhi to chhidakti hoon apni jaan. Us par bhi aur aap…” In a split second Ashutosh went from being angry, to being confused to being awkward at the realization of what she said, or rather what she left unsaid.

“What? Kya kah rahi ho tum? Pagal ho gayi ho?”

“I am sorry,” she wiped her tears with the back of her hand and made to leave. This was all a mistake.

“Wait. Nidhi,” he grabbed her hand to stop her from going, then found it awkward and let it go. She stopped though. “Bhaagna to koi tareeka nahin hai kissi bhi problem ko suljhane ka.”

“Mujhe koi problem nahin hai.”

“Problem nahin hai to ro kyon rahi ho?”

“Kyonki… mujhe Rahul ko aise nahin bolna chahiye tha aur aap shayad mujhe iske liye maaf nahin karenge.”

“Rahul ko main sambhaal loonga. Lekin jis raaste par tum ja rahi ho, use dekh kar mujhe tumhari chinta ho rahi hai.”

“Kyon?”

“Kyon? Tumhein nahin pata, kyon? Tumhari aankhon par parda pada hua hai. Infatutation ka.”

“Infatuation hone ki meri umra nahin rahi.”

“Kisne kah diya nahin rahi. How old are you? 22? 23? Main har saal tumhari umra ke logon ko supervise karta hoon…”

“Dr. Ashutosh. Please…”

“Look Nidhi,” Ashutosh softened and spoke calmly, “It’s not unusual. At this age… Falling in love… With an authority figure… I’m sure you have seen the infatuation of students with their teachers. Mostly ye harmless hoti hain. Lekin jis situation mein tum ho, jis situation mein main hoon… Ye fantasies tumhein problem mein daal sakti hain. Aur fantasies sachchai mein nahin badalti. I am a 38 year old man with a growing son to take care of. You must find someone more suitable for you…”

“Mere liye to aapne saare decisions pahle se hi le liye hain. Lekin aapko apne liye kya lagta hai?”

“Matlab?”

“Matlab aap kya sochte hain apni zindagi ke baare mein? Kya aapko kissi ki zaroorat hai? Kya aapki zindagi mein mere liye koi jagah hai?”

“Nidhi!”

“Maine aapko surprise kar diya hai. I won’t insist on an answer now. Mujhe koi jaldbaazi nahin hai.”

“Nidhi… Tum…”

“Kya main kuchh der Rahul ke saath aur baith sakti hoon?”

He nodded and went to his room. But soon he came out and observed her with Rahul again. She was reading him a story and putting him to sleep. After he fell asleep, she bent down and kissed him on forehead. She mumbled something which seemed like ‘I am sorry’ to Ashutosh. He stepped away from the door so that she did not see him standing there when she left.

Ashutosh went back to his room and started thinking. She had asked him a question. Did he need somebody in his life? As such it wasn’t difficult to answer. Did he need somebody? Yes – he did. But could he have somebody? That was the difficult question. Outwardly he made fun of his failed marriage, but inwardly he was scarred by it. After all, at one point of time, marrying Ranjeeta had seemed like the right thing to do. It, obviously, wasn’t so. If he thought only about his loneliness, he would have risked loving and marrying again. But Rahul? He was very young when Ranjeeta had left. It had been relatively easy to get him accustomed to living without her. If something went wrong again? If he never bonded with the woman he brought in his life? If he did bond, but…

It was all just too complicated. It had become easier to live a life devoted to work and Rahul, instead of trying to fill the gap that existed in both their lives. After Baba died, there was nobody to pester him about the second marriage either. So, life had fallen into a rhythm and nobody had disturbed it till then.

But then Nidhi happened. The girl, who was such a combination of strength and bitterness that it made no sense. And then one fine day she had appeared in Rahul’s life out of nowhere. Nidhi Auntie! Ashutosh had heard him talk about her. But never even in his dreams could he have imagined that the Nidhi his son fawned over was the same Dr. Nidhi, who never even smiled. But she did smile… With Kids, with Siddhi and with Rahul. And she bonded with him. She had been a mother and a father to her sister and she managed to be a mother-figure to Rahul. That too at such a young age… Age!! Wasn’t that THE problem? They were almost a generation apart. It was unthinkable… And yet! She had thought about it. She had been thinking about it for a while. Her sudden reticence and curtness on his birthday now made sense. And she thought of it as a real possibility. Otherwise she wouldn’t have spoken of it before Rahul. So, the ball came back to his court. What did he want? Did he want somebody? Did he want her?

Should he want her?

“Dr. Nidhi. Aap yahan lunch kar rahi thi. Siddhi ko pick karne nahin gayi?” Ashutosh asked her when he saw her coming out of canteen after having lunch with her colleagues.

“Maine usse baat ki, Sir. She is fine on her own during the day. To mere liye bhi yahi behtar hai ki main apne colleagues ke saath socialize karoon. Office ke baad to main uske saath rahti hi hoon.”

“That’s great Dr. Nidhi. She is old enough to at least partially look after herself. Aapne sahi faisla liya.”

“Yeah. Aur Sir, ek baat kahun aapse…”

“Boliye. Itna hichak kyon rahi hain?”

“Sir. Aap mujhe ‘Dr. Nidhi’ aur ‘aap’ kah kar address karna band kar dijiye.”

“Matlab?”

“‘Nidhi’ aur ‘tum’ hi theek hai na?” she said so innocently that Ashutosh laughed out loud.

“Okay. That was odd. But I can manage that,” Ashutosh continued smiling.

“Main chalti hoon Sir,” suddenly Nidhi felt odd about her request and ran away from there awkwardly.

“Kya hua Nidhi? Tum theek to ho?” she ran into Priyanka while going towards the ward.

“Main… Haan. Main theek hoon.”

“Apni shakal dekho. Kaise laal ho rahi hai? Aur paseena bhi aa raha hai.”

“BP… BP high ho gaya hoga. I need to sit down.”

“Okay. Take care.”

“Siddhi! Tujhse kuchh advice chahiye thi.”

“Mujhse tumhein advice chahiye? Wow! Batao. Batao.”

“Shut up. Chidha mat mujhe.”

“Achchha. Batao to.”

“Siddhi. Dr. Ashutosh ne hamari itni madad ki hai. Unka birthday aa raha hai. Mera khayaal hai ki mujhe unhein kuchh gift dena chahiye.”

“Bahut nek khayaal hai.”

“Lekin kya gift doon?”

“Ab ye main kaise bataun? Unhein tum jaanti ho achchhe se. Kuchh aisa do jo unhein pasand aaye.”

“Siddhi! Gifts khareedne mein ustaad tu hai. Kuchh to help kar.”

“Party kahan hai?”

“Mujhe nahin pata. I don’t think party hai.”

“Party nahin hai? To tumhein pata kaise chala?”

“Maine papers dekhe the unke hospital mein.”

“To agar woh party nahin kar rahe hain, to tum unke liye ek surprise party de do.”

“Main? Party?”

“Haan. Surprise party will be the best gift.”

“Okay… Lekin kaise arrange hoga?”

“Offo. Tum rahne do. Main Rahul se baat karti hoon. Ho jayega.”

“Okay…”

“Rahul! Yahan andhera kyon hai? Hiraman Kaka!” Ashutosh had come home running after receiving a call from Rahul that he had fallen sick.

“Surprise!” The lights came back suddenly and Ashutosh saw Rahul with his maid, Hiraman Kaka, Nidhi and Siddhi standing behind a huge cake. The hall was decorated and everyone was dressed for party.

“Happy birthday Papa,” Rahul ran towards him. Others also followed and greeted him. Nidhi was wearing a simple calf-length black dress. Ashutosh couldn’t help staring at her for a moment. But he recovered quickly.

“Thank you Nidhi. Ye aapka plan tha?” Although Ashutosh had dropped “Dr.” while addressing her, “aap” hadn’t gone out of his vocabulary. She hadn’t insisted again. But it disappointed her.

“Actually nahin. Siddhi ka idea tha aur usne aur Rahul ne mil kar hi poora plan banaya. Main to…”

“Aap to?”

“Aapko ghar par bulane ke liye jhooth tak nahin bol payi,” she laughed nervously, “Isliye last moment mein ye responsibility Rahul par shift ho gayi. I’m sorry. Aap dar gaye honge.”

“Itna nahin dara tha. Nice surprise.”

“Cake kaatein?”

“Sure.”

Siddhi and Rahul ate first and then they went to Rahul’s room to play, leaving Nidhi and Ashutosh alone at the dinner table.

“Ye dress aap par bahut achchhi lag rahi hai. Pahle kabhi nahin dekha aapko ismein.”

“Siddhi again. Aaj kal apni parties aur gadgets par kharche band kar diye hain usne, to paise kharch karne ki khujli ho rahi thi. Mujhe bakra bana diya.”

“Bahut khoobsoorat bakra banaya hai phir to!”

Nidhi blushed and did not say anything in reply.

“Waise mujhe pata hai ki aap is party ka credit nahin le rahi hain. But still… Thanks a lot. This was really thoughtful.”

“Well… Ye hamare thanks kahne ka tareeka tha. Aapne mujhe aur Siddhi ka itna sambhaala…”

“Achchha. To agle saal nahin milegi mujhe party?”

“This is unfair. Jiska birthday hota hai woh party deta hai. Aap kyon nahin dete?”

Ashutosh sighed, “Itne dinon se kaam aur Rahul ki zimmedaariyon mein ye hosh hi nahin raha ki zindagi ke kitne saal guzar gaye. Koi yaad dilane waala bhi nahin tha. Lekin I think insaan ko hamesha apne liye bhi thoda samay to nikaalna chahiye.”

“Haan. Yahi baat mujhe bhi realize hui hai. Mujhe mahsoos hua ki mere aur Siddhi ke relations isliye kharaab ho rahe the kyonki I was giving 100% of my life to her. And without realizing it, it put an obligation on her ki woh bhi apni 100% life mujhe de. She is growing up, she is exploring the world. Obviously, she wants time for other people. So, she started resenting me. Things are much better now that I have stepped back.”

Ashutosh looked at her smilingly.

“Kya hua?” she asked becoming conscious, “Aap aise kyon dekh rahe hain?”

“Aapki maturity appreciate kar raha hoon. Kai bachche paalne ke baad bhi log ye chhoti si baat nahin samajh paate hain. Ki the best way of parenting is to let go slowly, and not try to cling to your child for your life. And I hope ki mujhe bhi ye yaad rahe as Rahul grows up. Kyonki samajhne ke baad bhi, letting go is extremely tough.”

“Uski chinta mat kijiye. Main aapko yaad dila doongi.”

Asutosh laughed out loud,”That reminds me to tell you something else. Aap ye kab tak bachchon se dosti kar ke apna man bahlati rahengi? Ab jab aapko realize ho hi gaya hai ki aapko apne liye samay nikaalne ki zaroorat hai, aur aap apne colleagues ke saath socialize bhi karne lagi hain, then take another step. Make some friends.”

“Aap to aise kah rahe hain jaise mera koi dost hai hi nahin?”

“Kaun hai?”

“Tell me if I am being presumptuous. Lekin mujhe laga ki we are friends.”

“Oh.. well.. yeah.. Of course,” Ashutosh became slightly embarrassed, “But this is not what I meant. Friends of your age, with whom you can hang out, unwind, fall in love someday and move on in life… You know what I mean.”

Nidhi didn’t reply.

“Kya hua? Maine kuchh galat kah diya?”

“Nahin,” Nidhi looked distracted, but she smiled, “Aap kabhi kuchh galat nahin kahte. Mujhe jaldi se khaana khatam kar ke nikalna chahiye. Warna subah Siddhi ko school ke liye uthane mein der ho jayegi.” She gulped down the last few morsels of food in her plate, ate a little dessert for the sake of eating and got up without waiting for Ashutosh to finish.

Ashutosh also stood up after her, “Kuchh to baat hai Nidhi. Aap mujhe bataiye… Agar maine kuchh bhi aisa kaha…”

“Aap please mujhe sharminda na karein. Koi baat nahin hai. Main Siddhi ko le kar aati hoon…”

“Main aap logon ko drop kar deta hoon.”

“Aapko jaane ki zaroorat nahin hai, Sir. Aap driver ko bol dijiye.”

Ashutosh was confused with her behavior, but he did not insist. After she left, he picked up a wrapped packet that was lying beside a flower vase on a small table. “From Nidhi”, it said with a smiley face following it. He had seen it soon after entering the hall, But she seemed to have forgotten about it. Why? What suddenly came upon her?

“Di. Sab theek to hai?” Siddhi asked when they reached home.

“Kyon? Kya hua?”

“Tum bilkul khoyi hui ho. Meri baat bhi nahin sun rahi ho…”

“Bas thak gayi hoon Siddhi. So ja. Kal baat karte hain.”

“Di. Kuchh aur baat hai. Dr. Ashutosh ne kuchh kaha kya?”

“Let me be, Siddhi,” Nidhi snapped and went to her room, leaving Siddhi slightly shocked. She didn’t snap like that even when she disapproved her actions.

“Siddhi,” Nidhi caressed her forehead while trying to wake her up.

“Di? Kya hua?” she woke up with a start.

“Kuchh nahin. Tera alarm baj raha tha… Maine band kar diya. Main tere liye chai lai hoon.”

“Chai? Tum mere liye chai layi ho? Aise to kabhi peene nahin deti.”

“Bas sorry kahna tha. Kal raat main tujh par chillayi. Woh bhi bina wajah ke.”

“Kitni formal ho rahi ho tum? Lekin Di baat kya thi?”

“Kuchh nahin. Meri tabiyat kharaab thi. BP high tha. Dawai kha kar so gayi. Ab theek ho gaya.”

“Sure Di?”

“Haan baba. Chal ab uth. School ke liye taiyaar hona hai.”

“Sir. Aapke sign chahiye the in discharge papers par,” Nidhi entered Ashutosh’ office.

“Nidhi. Aap theek hain?” Ashutosh asked as he signed the papers.

“Ji. Main theek hoon. Kal raat ke liye sorry.”

“Hua kya tha?”

“Kuchh nahin. Mera BP badh gaya tha. Shayad isliye thoda irritated feel kar rahi thi.”

Ashutosh smiled, “Ek doctor se, woh bhi apne boss se jhooth bol rahi hain aap. Lekin main insist nahin karoonga. Aap jab comfortable feel karein bata dein. Aur agar meri wajah se kuchh…”

“No. No Sir. Aapki wajah se kuchh bhi nahin hua. Ho hi nahin sakta.”

“Good to know. Aur Rahul ne mujhe bataya ki aapne cake kal khud banaya tha.”

“Ji.”

“Thanks. Ek to bahut achchha tha. Doosre aapne itni mehnat ki.”

“Sookhe thanks se kaam nahin chalega Dr. Ashutosh.”

“Achchha. To phir mujhe kya karna hoga?”

“Umm… Aapko hamein treat deni hogi.”

“Okay… That is doable. Bataiye kahan chalna hai?”

“Ab itni to mehnat kijiye. Aap decide kijiye. Apni favourite jagah le kar chaliye.”

“Lekin aapko pasand nahin aayi to?”

“Mujhe pasand aayegi. Don’t worry about that.”

“Theek hai phir. Dinner tomorrow? Hum hospital ne nikal kar Rahul aur Siddhi ko pick kar lenge.”

“Ji. Sure.”

“Look who has come to meet Siddhi,” Ashutosh came to Siddhi’s room next morning with Rahul.

“Hi Rahul.”

“Hi Siddhi. These are for you,” Rahul jumped on the bed beside Siddhi and gave her a bouquet.

“So sweet. Aren’t you going to school?”

“Today is a holiday.”

“Oh right. And I was supposed to be partying,” Siddhi pouted.

“Bas kar Siddhi,” Nidhi reprimanded her, “Us party ki wajah se you are on the hospital bed now.”

“Di please. Don’t start again. Theek hai yaar. Tabiyat kharaab ho gayi. Sabki hoti hai kabhi na kabhi. Not your usual sermon again please. Friends are bad, parties are bad… I am not a loner like you.”

“And I do not want you to be a loner like me,” Nidhi said sadly and stopped when she felt Ashutosh’ hand on her shoulder. She took the hint and changed the subject, “What else has Rahul brought? I see there are some games.”

“Yes. Siddhi and I can play the games. Then she won’t get bored.”

“Great,” Ashutosh said, “Siddhi aur Rahul games khelenge. Tab tak main aur Dr. Nidhi coffee pee kar aate hain. Okay?”

“I’m sorry, Sir. Mujhe Rahul ke saamne Siddhi se bahas nahin karni chahiye thi.”

“Maine aapko kissi aur wajah se roka.”

“Ji?”

“Aise confrontational hone se kaam nahin chalega. Aur abhi woh irritated hai ki party mein uski tabiyat kharaab ho gayi. I don’t think she is going to listen to any reasoning.”

“Okay.”

“Waise aapne apni schooling kahan se ki thi?”

“St. Joseph. Kyon?”

“Not from Woodstock International?”

“Nahin.”

“Phir aapne Siddhi ka admission wahan kyon karwaya?”

“I… I just wanted to make sure she gets the best. Woodstock was the most prestigious school.”

“And now she is in the company of the elites of the city. The richest brats.”

Nidhi looked thoughtful, “Maine galat faisle le liye Dr. Ashutosh. Mujhe akele rahne ka faisla nahin karna chahiye tha. At least Siddhi ko to kissi ke saath bhej hi dena chahiye. I didn’t know how to raise a child.”

“Dr. Nidhi. Mera matlab kuchh bhi aisa nahin tha. Don’t blame yourself for anything. Aapne saare faisle waise hi liye hain, jaise ki koi bhi maa-baap apne bachchon ke liye lete hain. They want the best for their kids. Maine bhi to Rahul ko Woodstock hi bheja. But now I am wondering if that was the right choice.”

“But he is amongst his equal. He’ll know how to cope.”

“Galat aur sahi ka farq har kissi ko hona chahiye. Kuchh bachchon ko jis halat mein maine dekha, main waise to Rahul ko nahin dekhna chahunga.”

“Phir hum kya kar sakte hain? Rahul to phir bhi abhi chhota hai. Shayad aap use prepare kar denge ki woh peer pressure mein na aaye. Siddhi ab uske liye badi ho gayi hai. Main kya karoon?”

“Mere paas koi jaadoo ki chhadi nahin hai ise solve karne ke liye. Lekin main itna kahunga Nidhi ki you have been very brave. Don’t lose hopes now. Aur… apne aap ko akela mat mahsoos karo. Main hoon tumhare saath. Solution nikal aayega, but you must keep your cool. Okay?”

She nodded in reply.

“Hello Dr. Nidhi. Aap ab tak hospital aayin nahin…”

“Dr. Ashutosh. Main Siddhi bol rahi hoon.”

“Siddhi? What happened? Why are you crying?”

“Di has fallen sick Dr. Ashutosh. Mujhe kuchh samajh mein nahin aa raha.”

“Calm down. Mujhe batao kya hua hai?”

“Raat mein fever aa gaya tha. Usne paracetamol liya. Phir nahin utra to mujhe phone kar ke wapas bulaya aur thandhe paani ki patti karne ko kaha. Bola ki fever kam ho jaye to chhod doon. Maine wahi kiya. But subah se bukhaar aur bhi tez hai. Aur woh behosh padi hai. Main patti kiye ja rahi hoon lekin…”

“Hush… Calm down Siddhi. Aise rone se kuchh nahin hoga. Bilkul chinta mat karo. Main abhi aa raha hoon, okay?”

“Dr. Ashutosh. Di theek to ho jayegi na?” Siddhi asked anxiously when Ashutosh came back to Nidhi’s hospital room after expediting her blood samples in the lab,

“Blood test ke results aate hi main tumhein bataunga Siddhi.”

“Main use bahut pareshaan karti hoon Dr. Ashutosh. I trouble her so much… I know I should not. Lekin…Woh meri baat hi nahin sun rahi hai. Maine usse kitni baar kaha ki ek baar aankhein khol de. Main use bilkul pareshaan nahin karoongi. Kuchh bhi nahin maangoongi. Kabhi parties ke liye ghar se bahar nahin rahoongi. Ask her to talk to me Dr. Ashutosh. Please. Woh mujhse naaraaz ho kar, mujhe chhod kar nahin ja sakti…”

“Calm down. Calm down Siddhi.”

“Meri chinta mein hi uski ye halat hui Dr. Ashutosh. Kal raat…”

“Kya hua?”

“Main party mein thi. Usne mujhe nahin bulaya hota to… Us party mein raid pad gayi thi. Thankfully main wapas aa gayi thi… Main…”

“Be rational Siddhi. Uski wajah se kuchh nahin hua hai Dr. Nidhi ko. Unki tabiyat kharaab hai. Theek ho jayegi. Come on now. Aansoo pochh lo. Aur sambhaalo apne aap ko.”

A nurse entered with the results of blood test just then. Ashutosh took the reports and studied them carefully.

“Kya hai reports mein Dr. Ashutosh?” Siddhi asked anxiously.

“Kuchh ghabraane ki baat nahin hai. Mera shaq sahi nikla. Viral hi hai. Lekin ye ek rare strain hai virus ki jiska effect thoda zyada extreme hota hai. But within ten days your sister will be fit and fine as usual. Okay?”

“Aap sach kah rahe hain?”

“100%. Main abhi physician ko bulwa kar confirm kar leta hoon. But main bhi itna bura doctor nahin hoon,” he joked and it made Siddhi smile.

“Thank you Dr. Ashutosh.”

“And listen to me now. Jab tak tumhari Di theek nahin ho jaati hai, I need you to take care of yourself. Main apne driver ko bol deta hoon. He will take you to your home. Wahan se 8-10 dinon ke layak apne kapde aur baaki samaan le lo. Phir woh tumhein mere ghar drop kar dega. Tum wahi rahogi aur Rahul ke saath school bhi ja sakti ho. Okay?”

Siddhi nodded. She was shaken up after the news of last night’s party raid. With Nidhi lying unconscious, any kind of support was comforting for her.

“Kya hua?” Ashutosh asked when he saw her lost in thoughts.

“Mujhe bahut dar lag raha hai Dr. Ashutosh. Kya main yahan ruk sakti hoon?”

“Tum party ki wajah se ghabrai hui ho?”

She nodded.

“Come here,” he hugged her protectively, “You are safe. Don’t worry.”

“Di ko kab tak hosh aayega?”

“Shaam tak. Main tumhein bulwa loonga. Tum ghar jao aur aaraam karo. Tumhare yahan rukne ka koi fayda nahin hai. Mujhe tumhari bhi chinta hoti rahegi.”

“Dr. Ashutosh?”

“Paison ki zaroorat padegi kya Di ke treatment ke liye?”

“Ye kyon poochh rahi ho tum?” Ashutosh was amused.

“Mera iPad… Main bech sakti hoon.”

“Pagal ladki,” Ashutosh grinned openly now, “Viral hai. Koi aisi bhayanak beemari nahin hai tumhari Di ko. Ye rahi car. Ghar jao tum.”

“Siddhi…” Ashutosh heard Nidhi’s weak voice.

“Nidhi. Tum uth gayin?”

“Siddhi… Use kuchh samajh nahin aata… Woh apni dekh bhaal…”

“Nidhi? Kya bol rahi ho?”

“Usse pocket money bhi nahin sambhalti… Woh… Dr. Ashutosh… Use kaun sambhaalega…”

“Shut up Nidhi. Kya ho gaya hai tumhein? Tum karogi dekh-bhaal uski. Kuchh nahin hua hai tumhein.”

“Main… Dr. Ashutosh…” she choked on her words and started crying.

“Kya ho gaya hai tumhein? Listen to me. Can you get up? Let me help you,” he helped her sit up on the bed. “Feeling better?” he asked.

She wiped her tears and nodded, “Siddhi kahan hai?”

“Mere ghar par hai. Main abhi bulwa doonga. Tumhein kya ho gaya tha?”

“Mujhe laga ki main…  main zinda nahin bachoongi. Koi control hi nahin tha mera khud ke oopar. Main kitni koshish kar rahi thi Siddhi se baat karne ki lekin… I just blacked out… Kya hua hai mujhe?”

“MBBS cheat kar ke pass kiya tha kya?” Ashutosh joked, “Ye rahi blood test report tumhari. Dekh lo khud hi.”

She sighed in relief on seeing the report.

“Suno ab. Main Siddhi ko bula raha hoon phone kar ke. Lekin tumhein warn kar doon. Woh bahut ghabrai hui thi. Achchha hua usne tumhein aise nahin dekha, jaise abhi maine dekha. You must maintain your cool, okay?”

She just nodded. But when he stepped out, she grew emotional. She had never fallen sick like that. Despite dealing with and studying dieases in last five years of MBBS, she hadn’t fallen sick at all. And she had never given any thought to Siddhi’s future should something happen to her. She was very shaken. And she wondered… What would have happened if Ashutosh was not around. Sidhhi wouldn’t even have know whom to call for help. She wasn’t surprised to hear from Ashutosh that Siddhi had panicked. She would have. What would she do if something happened to Nidhi?

Ashutosh saw the hint of tears in Nidhi’s eyes when he came back. “What happened now?”

She smiled through her tears, “Nothing. Just… Thank you Dr. Ashuosh.”

“Really? Agar har thanks ke liye mujhe ek rupya bhi milta na, to I’d be a billionaire today. Thanks to you and your sister.”

“Agar mere paas billions hote, ya aur bhi zyada, I would have happily given them to you today”

“Right. For now I can make do with a little more smile and little less frown on your face. By the way, Siddhi ke saath Rahul bhi aa raha hai.”

“Di!” Siddhi rushed towards Nidhi, hugged her and started crying.

“Hey. Siddhi. Everything is all right. Ro kyon rahi hai tu?”

“I am sorry Di,” she broke the hug, but continued to cry.

“Sorry? Why are you saying sorry? I am sorry Siddhi, for scaring you.”

“I am sorry for everything. For all the trouble I have caused you.”

“Pagal,” Nidhi smiled affectionately, “Main death-bed par nahin hoon. Aise kyon bol rahi hai?”

“Di… Main…”

“Kya hua Siddhi?”

“Kuchh nahin. Main bahut dar gayi thi. Main… Just don’t leave me ever.”

“Main tere liye hi zinda hoon. Agar tujhe nahin dekha hota to shayad usi pistol se…”

“Di. Please.”

“Sorry. But ab please rona band kar. Achchha ye bata, tu Dr. Ashutosh ke yahan rah rahi hai?”

“Haan Di. Aur unhone kaha hai ki jab tab tum theek nahin ho jaati, main wahi rahoon. Is that okay?”

Nidhi thought for a moment and then nodded, “Yeah. That’s fine. Just… be nice when you are there. You understand…”

“I will always be nice Di. Always. Main ab kabhi tumhein trouble nahin karoongi…”

“Don’t say that Siddhi. Main tujhe apni tarah nahin banana chahti. I want you to have a normal life. Aur mujhe pareshaan karna to is umra mein teri normal life ka hissa hai. Samay se pahle bada hone ki zaroorat nahin hai tujhe. Main jab tujhe kuchh kahti hoon to… bas un cheezon se tujhe rokna chahti hoon jinse irreversible damage ho sakta hai. I am not a billionaire Siddhi. Isliye darti hoon ki agar tu kissi problem mein phansi…”

“You are better than billionaires, Di. And I promise ki aaj ke baad se you will never feel the need to have those billions, not because of me.”

Nidhi pulled her in hug.

“Kya baat hai? TV par Ram-Bharat milaap bhi itna emotional nahin tha,” Ashutosh entered Nidhi’s room with Rahul and joked.

The sisters broke their hug and looked at him questioningly.

“Okay. Aap log TV par Ramayan dekhne ke liye thode chhote hain. Mera joke bekaar ho gaya. Never mind. Sab gile-shikwe door ho gaye?”

Both of them smiled.

“To phir, hamara hero apni Nidhi Auntie ke liye kuchh laaya hai.”

“Really?” Nidhi looked genuinely excited, “Kya hai Rahul? Dikhao mujhe?”

Rahul spread a chart-paper before her. He had drawn a bouquet of flowers with “Get Well Soon” written on it.

“That’s so sweet, Rahul. Thank you so much.”

“Chaliye. Ab Dr. Nidhi ko aaraam ki zaroorat hai. Aap log ghar jaiye. Kal milenge.”

“Aap ghar nahin aa rahe Papa?” Rahul asked.

“Aaj aap maan lijiye ki Papa ki night duty hai, okay Rahul?” Ashutosh said.

“Nahin Sir. Aap ghar jaiye,” Nidhi interrupted, “Main theek hoon. Aur meri dekh-bhaal ke liye log hain yahan.”

“Lekin Dr. Nidhi…”

“Sir please. Aap ghar par rahenge to bachche safe feel karenge,” Nidhi looked at Rahul as well as Siddhi.

Ashutosh gave in reluctantly, “Theek hai. Main nurse ko bol deta hoon ki aapki dawaiyon aur dinner ka intezaam kar dein.”

“Ji.”

“Woh mere haathon se nikalti ja rahi hai Dr. Ashutosh,” Nidhi was extremely worried and started talking on their way to the farmhouse, “Pahle hamesha mere saath rahna chahti thi… Ab to jaise mujhse door bhaagti hai… Har cheez friends ke saath karni hai. Har doosre din party… Mera uske school jaana bhi ab use pasand nahin hai… Pata nahin kaun friends hain uske… Maine kitni baar kaha ki unhein hamare ghar par bhi bulaye… Kam se kam mujhe pata to ho… Lekin nahin. Sab high-class friends hain uske. Unhein ghar bulane mein sharm aati hai use. Unhein treat bhi deti hai to bahar deti hai… Mujhe to shaq hai ki drinking aur smoking bhi try ki hai usne… Bas drugs ka chakkar na ho…”

“Nidhi. Calm down. You are imagining the worst…”

“Aaj kal pocket money dene ke alawa uski life mein mera koi kaam hi nahin hai… Pata nahin kya kar rahi thi party mein… Food poisoning to definitely hai… But dawai… dawai kahan rakhi maine? Oh God…”

“Maine rakh li hain dawaiyan. Dr. Nidhi. Shaant ho jaiye… Aap itna kyon ghabra rahi hain? Tabiyat kharaab hui hai. Theek ho jayegi…”

“Aaj ka din achchha nahin hai Dr. Ashutosh…”

Ashutosh stopped the car, turned towards the passenger seat and held her hands. “Nidhi!”

“Haan!” she was startled as if not realizing what was happening till then. “Sir?”

“Paseena aa raha hai aapko AC mein bhi. Shaant ho jaiye. Aapka nervous breakdown ho jayega warna.”

She wiped her forehead. “Ji,” she said meekly and Ashutosh resumed driving.

“Dr. Nidhi. Let me check your blood-pressure,” Ashutosh came to Nidhi after Siddhi was admitted in the hospital and her treatment had started.

“Blood pessure? Mera? Kyon?”

“Aapki halat sahi nahin lag rahi hai mujhe.”

“Main theek hoon, Sir.”

“Aapka boss koi administrator nahin, ek doctor hai. Let me check it.”

Nidhi gave in. And the reading left nothing to guess. Her BP was alarmingly high.

“Mujhe kuchh kahne ki zaroorat hai? Aapko ghar jaana hoga abhi. Aapko aaraam ki zaroorat hai.”

“Main Siddhi ko hospital mein chhod kar nahin ja sakti.”

“Yahan aur log hai uski dekh-bhaal karne ke liye. Aur bhi patients hain is hospital mein Dr. Nidhi.”

“Lekin Siddhi meri responsibility hai.”

“Theek hai. Main yahan rahoonga.”

“Maine kaha na Dr. Ashutosh. Main yahan se nahin jaungi.”

Ashutosh was irritated, “Aap kabhi kissi ki baat maan kyon nahin sakti?”

“Aap Rahul ko kissi aur ke bharose chhod kar chale jaate?”

He looked at her for a moment. Then spoke calmly and firmly, “Main aapke bharose chhod kar chala jaata. Mujhe aap par itna trust hai. Lekin lagta nahin ki aapko mujh par hai? Balki aapko kissi par nahin hai. Kyon Dr. Nidhi?”

“Rahul ko sabse zyada trust kis par hai?”

“Rahul ki baat kahan se aa gayi?”

“Mere sawaal ka jawaab dijiye.”

“I guess, mujh par hoga. Saare bachchon ko apne parents par hota hai.”

“Aur agar aap Rahul ka ye trust break kar dein, to kya woh kabhi kissi aur par bharosa kar payega?”

“Dr. Nidhi. Main samajh sakta hoon ki itni kam umra mein aapke liye apne parents ko lose karna bahut mushkil raha hoga. Mere bhi parents ki death mere bachpan mein ho gayi thi. Main ye bhi maanta hoon ki mere liye life appke jitni tough nahin thi. Baba mere father ke bahut achchhe dost the aur unhone mujhe adopt kiya. Bahut pyaar diya. Aapke paas koi nahin tha. Us par se Siddhi ki responsibility. Main aapki kadwahat samajhta hoon. Lekin iske liye apne parents ko dosh dena to sahi nahin hai. Apni maut par bhala kiska wash hota hai. Woh jaan-boojh kar to appko akela nahin chhod kar gaye the…”

“Gaye the. Jaan-boojh kar gaye the. Suicide kiya tha unhone. Soch samajh kar.”

“Kya?”

“Kuchh nahin socha unhone hamare baare mein. Main to sochne samajhne ke layak thi. Lekin Siddhi? Uske baare mein bhi nahin socha. Aaye the hamare relatives. Hamari help karne ki bhi koshish ki thi. Lekin jab maa-baap ne saath nahin diya, to main kissi aur par kaise bharosa karti? Maine hi sabko mana kiya. To aapko ye personally lene ki zaroorat nahin hai ki main Siddhi ko aapke bharose bhi chhod kar nahin jaungi.”

She ran off from there, leaving Ashutosh stunned. It took him a couple of minutes to think of what to do. The he went out to look for her. He knew where she would be. She was on the terrace. From afar he could not guess that she was crying. But when he went close to her, he realized that silent tears were falling from her eyes.

He put his hand on her shoulder and said softly, “Mere office mein chaliye. Yahan koi bhi aa sakta hai.” She complied.

“Paanch saal ho gaye hain,” Nidhi started speaking without any prodding, “Lekin woh scene nahin bhoolta mujhe. Aaj hi ka din tha. Maine thode dinon pahle hi MBBS shuru kiya tha. Us din dher saari classes thi. Aur practicals bhi. Main thaki thi aur jaldi so gayi thi. Siddhi ke saath hi. Ek dhamake ki aawaaz se meri neend khuli. Aas paas sab normal tha. Ek pal ko laga ki shayad maine koi sapna dekha tha. Lekin bechaini ho rahi thi. Main bahar aa gayi. Mummy-Papa ke kamre mein light jali hui thi. Maine socha unse poochhoon. Darwaaza locked nahin tha. Jab maine andar dekha to… Mummy zameen par thi. Unke sar par goli lagi thi. Papa bagal mein baithe hue the aur unhone apne sar par pistol taan rakhi thi. Main itna shocked thi ki main chilla bhi nahin paayi. Papa ki nazar mujh par padi… Par woh phir bhi nahin ruke. Mere saamne unhone khud ko goli maar li. Idhar maine Papa ko girte dekha, udhar Siddhi ke rone ki aawaaz aayi. Uski bhi neend khul gayi thi. Woh ghabrayi hui usi kamre ki taraf aa rahi thi. Main uski aur daudi, aur use god mein utha kar neighbour ke yahan le gayi taki woh Mummy-Papa ki woh halat dekh na le. Use unke yahan chhoda. Phir Mummy-Papa ko car mein daal kar hospital le gayi. Maine khud hi car drive ki. Main atharah saal ki nahin hui thi. Mere paas license bhi nahin tha. They were dead on arrival. Phir main police station gayi, aur FIR likhwayi. Dubara mujhe us car mein baithne ki himmat nahin hui. Maine police station mein chhod di. For evidence. Wapas aa kar Siddhi ko neighbour ke yahan se sote hue hi uthaya aur ghar aa gayi. Mummy-Papa ke kamre mein pistol padi hui thi tab bhi. Maine socha ki use utha kar wahi karoon jo unhone kiya. Siddhi ko goli maar kar khud bhi mar jaun. Lekin main doctor banne ja rahi thi. Mera kaam jaan bachaana tha. Lena nahin. Main wapas aa kar apne kamre mein baith gayi. Uske baad sab hazy hai. Mere neighbor ne relatives ko bulaya. Baaki sab kaam karwaye. Main bas Siddhi ko le kar baithi hui thi. Uska khaana-peena dekh rahi thi. Baaki sab jaise background mein ho raha tha. Mujhe hosh tab aaya jab log ye discuss karne lage ki main aur Siddhi kiske saath rahenge. Kissi ke saath jaane ka koi sawaal hi nahin tha. Sab log mere faisle se gussa hue. Lekin main koi aur faisla le nahin sakti thi. Phir kuchh dinon baad ek police waala aaya. Case close ho raha tha. Suicide note mein Papa ne likha tha ki woh pahle Mummy ko maar kar, phir khud ko maarne waale hain. Post-mortem confirmed it. Woh mujhe meri car lautane aaya tha. Evidence release ho rahe the. Main use kaha ki mujhe nahin chahiye. Pata nahin use kya bhalmansahat soojhi. Usne car bech kar usse jo paise mile, mujhe de diye. Main usse kuchh nahin kah sakti thi, lekin main woh paise Mummy-Papa ke room mein phenke aur use band kar diya. Phir use kabhi nahin khola… Aaj tak nahin.”

Ashutosh let out an audible sigh. She had been hiding too much. This was the death anniversary of her parents. And all the pain had come back.

“Aap isliye ghar nahin jaana chahti thi aaj? Aapko woh sab yaad aa raha tha?”

She nodded, “Mujhe bahut ghabrahat ho rahi thi. Aur Siddhi bhi nahin thi. Maine usse kaha tha ki is baar na jaye party mein. Mere saath rahe. But use laga ki main use rokne ke liye bahana bana rahi hoon. Ab lag raha hai ki uski problem ka hi premonition ho raha tha mujhe. Meri baat maan leti to uski tabiyat to kharaab nahin hoti. Aap bataiye mujhe Dr. Ashutosh. Kya mujhe kuchchh galat lag raha tha? Wahan drugs ho rahe the, hai na?”

Ashutosh nodded, “I think so. Main jaanta hoon kuchh bachchon ko jo wahan the. Unke parents ke through. It doesn’t surprise me.”

“Kya… Siddhi ne bhi drugs liye the?”

“Maine check nahin karwaya Dr. Nidhi. Use problem food poisoning ki wajah se hi hui thi. To uski dawaiyan de di hain.”

“Lekin aapko kya lagta hai?”

“Baad mein baat karte hain. Abhi tum already bahut pareshaan ho. Aur khud bhi beemaar ho,” Ashutosh said softly. Nidhi did not resist him this time.

“I am sorry. Maine aapko bhi pareshaan kar diya,” Nidhi suddenly became conscious of her outburst.

“Nidhi. Main jaanta hoon ki logon par trust na karne ke liye tumhare paas bahut badi wajah hai. Main tumhein question nahin kar sakta is baare mein. Lekin ise meri request samjho. Thoda bharosa karo mujh par. Tumne already kiya hai. Ye sab mere saath share kar ke. Aur main ye bharosa nahin tootne doonga.”

She nodded, “Lekin mujhe ghar jaane ko mat boliye.”

“Theek hai. Nahin bolunga. Lekin tumhein khud ko shaant rakhna hoga. Aur agar BP badhe to dawai leni hogi. Okay? Ye koi umra nahin hai high blood pressure hone ki tumhari.”

She nodded meekly.

“Aur thodee der hospital mein hi so lo.”

She nodded again and got up, “Main chalti hoon.”

“Take care.”

“Dr. Nidhi? Aap is taraf?” Ashutosh stopped his car near the bus stop when he spotted Nidhi. It was Sunday afternoon.

“Ji. Orbit Mall ja rahi thi.”

“Great. Hum bhi wahin ja rahe hain. Rahul ko wahan games khelne hain. Aa jaiye.”

“Sure?”

“Ab main jhooth kyon bolunga? Come in.”

Nidhi did not resist further. Rahul was excited to see his Nidhi Auntie and volunteered to shift to the back seat, so that Nidhi could have the passenger seat in front.

“Nidhi Auntie. Aapko pata hai, wahan multi-player games bhi hai. Lekin Papa mere saath nahin khelte. Aap khelengi?”

“Rahul,” Ashutosh interrupted, “Dr. Nidhi ko apna kaam hai…”

“Koi baat nahin, Sir. Mujhe bas Siddhi ke liye iPad lena tha. Mujhe koi jaldbaazi nahin hai. If you don’t mind, I’d be happy to play with him.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes Sir.”

“Great then.”

After buying the tokens for various games, Rahul forgot all about Ashutosh and dragged Nidhi to various games. Ashutosh watched on. It was adorable how well they got along. He welcomed them back with a smile.

“Thaka diya aapne Dr. Nidhi ko?” he asked Rahul playfully.

“No Sir. Mujhe aadat hai. Aur main… enjoy karti hoon.”

“I know. Aur ye iska poora fayda uthata hai.”

“Aisa kyon kah rahe hain aap?”

“Papa. Softy!” Rahul had spotted the softy vendor and wanted one immediately.

“Here. Take the money and get it. Also get one for Dr. Nidhi.”

“No Sir. Main kya karoongi?”

“Khayengi, aur kya karengi? Go Rahul.”

“Aapke liye kaun sa flavour laun Nidhi Auntie?”

“Jo tumhein pasand ho wahi.”

“Chocolate?”

“Okay.”

“He misses having a mother,” Ashutosh said after Rahul left.

“What happened to her?”

She was surprised when Ashutosh laughed, “Nothing happened to her. Or rather love happened to her. A bit too often.”

“Excuse me?”

“We divorced when Rahul was two. She had fallen in love with someone else. And… Well… In another two years they had divorced as well. After that I did not keep track.”

“You don’t sound upset at all.”

“She was childish. I knew it all along. And I think I had found it cute at one point of time. Mujhe lagta tha ki she’d grow with time. Lekin aisa hua nahin. Mujhe gussa bhi bahut aaya jab pata chala. But then I realized that my anger was not going to change her. Maine bas usse Rahul ki custody maangi. She happily let me have it. Then we separated almost amicably.”

“Aapne sahi decision liya.”

“You think so?”

“Yes. Rahul is lucky. Kai bachche nahin hote itne lucky.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Just like that,” Nidhi replied as if she had just jerked herself out of a chain of thought. Obviously she was lying. There was something. But Ashutosh did not press. Pressurizing her never worked anyway.

“To aapko Apple store jaana hai? For the iPad?”

“Yeah.”

“Let’s go. Main bhi apne liye dekhta hoon. Mere pichhle tablet par to Rahul ne kabza kar liya.”

“Bachchon ko mana nahin kar sakte.”

“Yep. Aap bhi to Siddhi ke liye hi khareed rahi hain.”

“Ji.”

“Lijiye, Rahul bhi aa gaya. With the Softy. Kha lijiye. Phir chalte hain.”

“I think main baad mein loongi,” Nidhi said after checking out the models at the store.

“Kyon. Kya hua?”

“Surprise dene ka idea sahi nahin tha. Ab mujhe pata nahin ki use black chahiye hoga ya white.”

“Aapko kaun sa pasand hai.”

“Mujhe?” Nidhi laughed as if he had asked something absurd.

“Haan. Ismein hansne ki kya baat hai?”

“Mujhe kuchh bhi chalta hai.”

“Aisa kaise ho sakta hai. Aap koi itni boodhi nahin ho gayi hain ki aapki koi pasand-napasand na ho.”

“Ho hi gayi hoon. Khair. Aap le lijiye. Main Siddhi ke saath aa kar, ya usse poochh kar baad mein le loongi.”

“Actually main bhi confused hoon ki black loon ya white. Mujhe dono hi achchhe lag rahe hain. To aisa karte hain. Hum ek black aur ek white le lete hain. Siddhi ko jo pasand ho aap use woh de dijiyega. Main doosra rakh loonga. Mere liye decision bhi ho jayega. Aur aapka surprise bhi rah jayega.”

“Iski zaroorat nahin hai Sir. Aapki to pasand-napasand hai na.”

“Maine kaha na mujhe dono hi pasand aa rahe hain. Isliye to problem hai. Fortunately yahan red nahin hai. Warna main aapko bol deta ki red main kissi keemat par nahin loonga.”

“Red would have been nice actually.”

“Really? I don’t think iPad red color mein aata hai. Pasand batayi bhi aapne to non-existent.”

“Non-existent cheezon ko pasand karna achchha hai. Pata hai ki nahin hain. Trust nahin tootta. Existing cheezein trust-worthy nahin hoti… Khair. Main aapko bore kar rahi hoon.”

“Nahin. Aap mujhe intrigue kar rahi hain.”

“Agar aap sure hain ki aapko koi bhi color chalega to hum khareed kar nikalte hain yahan se.”

“Okay.”

“Sir. Agar aap logon ko kahin aur jaana ho to main yahan se bus ya auto le loongi.”

“Nahin. Hum wapas hi ja rahe hain.”

“Phir mujhe usi bus-stop par drop kar dijiye, jahan se pick kiya tha.”

“Main aapko ghar drop kar deta hoon.”

“Nahin,” she replied urgently, “Mujhe ghar nahin jaana hai.”

“To kahan jaana hai? Main wahin drop kar doonga.”

“Mujhe nahin pata,” she replied absent-mindedly.

Ashutosh was alarmed, “Dr. Nidhi? Kya hua hai?”

“Kuchh nahin. Aap mujhe bus-stop se pahle ek park hai wahan drop kar dijiye.”

“Siddhi kahan hai?”

“Woh apne friends ke saath gayi hai. Kissi friend ke farmhouse par party hai. Kal shaam tak aayegi.”

“Aap mere saath chaliye.”

“Nahin Sir. Main…”

“Mujhe aapse baat karni hai. Chaliye.”

“Nidhi Auntie! Mein aapko apni drawings dikhaun?”

“Rahul. Baad mein. Abhi Papa ko Dr. Nidhi se kuchh kaam hai.”

“Dikhane dijiye na Sir. Kitna excited hai.”

“Nahin. Abhi nahin. Rahul. Beta apne kamre mein jaiye. Auntie se boliye aapke kapde change karwa dein.”

“Aap meri drawings dekhe bina mat jaiyega Nidhi Autnie.”

“Nahin jaungi.”

Nidhi looked uncomfortable and nervous after Rahul left.

“Ghar kyon nahin jaana chahti aap? Kya baat hai?”

“Aisa kuchh nahin hai. Main bas bore ho jaati ghar par akele…”

“Aur park mein akele bahut enjoy karti? Mujhe pata hai aap normally bhi bahut khush nahin rahti hain. Lekin aaj…”

Nidhi’s mobile rang interrupting their conversation.

“Siddhi ka phone hai. I must take it, Sir.”

“Sure.”

“Hello Siddhi…. Kya… Kya hua… Oh God! Tu ghabra mat Siddhi. I will reach there right away… Kuchh nahin hoga… Don’t worry… Address bata…”

“Kya hua Dr. Nidhi?”

“Siddhi ki tabiyat kharaab ho gayi hai. Symptoms se food poisoning lag rahi hai. Woh bahut ghabra gayi hai. Mujhe abhi jaana hoga.”

“Main chalta hoon aapke saath.”

“Rahul…”

“Use maid sambhaal legi. Don’t worry…”

“Nahin. Uski drawings…”

“Come on Dr. Nidhi. Ye drawings dekhne ka time nahin hai…”

“Main use bol kar aati hoon. Warna use bura lagega. Uska kamra kahan hai?”

Ashutosh sighed and pointed towards Rahul’s room. Her sensitivity was endearing, but he wondered if she overdid it for kids.

Regaining Trust (Part 4)

“Meri class mein sabke paas ipad hai. They keep doing FaceTime all the time,” Siddhi said on the breakfast table.

“You can do Facebook from my laptop, Siddhi.”

“Facebook nahin Di. FaceTime. It’s a video calling feature only on Apple products.”

“But we have a webcam. Aur school mein itna time bitane ke baad, tu phir unhi logon ke saath video chat karna chahti hai?” Nidhi tried to make a joke about her demand.

“Offo Di. You don’t understand. It’s… It’s not the webcam. FaceTime is… Well… iPad is cool. And everyone has it.”

“Okay. I will find out about it,” Nidhi said meekly because she did not want Siddhi to flare up again. This happened too often these days. Last time it was about some branded nail polish she wanted to buy. Before that about the different running and walking shoes from Nike that she needed. Each costed her above 7000 bucks. And now this iPad. Nidhi already knew the prices. She was only postponing the inevitable. She’d buy it for her eventually. And then try to compensate for it by taking buses instead of autos herself. Not that this kind of money could be saved by that. She hated digging into the savings. It was for Siddhi’s education. Nidhi had hoped that she’d run the house with her internship stipend and not spend any more savings on their daily needs after her MBBS was over. But Siddhi was growing, her needs were growing. The stipend was meagerly. Nidhi made some mental calculations. For iPad she will have to break another FD. Each FD was of one lac Rs. Around 40-45 thousands will be left after she bought the iPad. She would leave that in her savings account, instead of putting back in FD or any other investment. Some demand or the other will come up from Siddhi again. It was better to have some cash at hand. May be she should stop worrying about savings so much. After the internship was over, she’d be able to earn a decent salary. And it was only a year away. By the time Siddhi finished her 10th board exams, Nidhi should be settled well enough to support her further studies. But… But what if something went wrong… Saving were needed…. And yet an FD will have to be broken.

“Bye Di. Main ja rahi hoon. Aur aaj Natasha ke ghar party hai. So, don’t come to pick me up. I will be back later.” Oh yes! She had forgotten the 2000 Rs. spent on a gift for Natasha’s birthday. “She is my best friend Di. Uske liye mujhe kuchh to dhang ka khreedna padega. Kuchh uske standard ka,” Siddhi had argued.

But why was she grudging? It was her responsibility to make sure that Siddhi had everything she needed to be happy. She should not feel like an orphan. But the car… She wanted to be driven to her school in a car like other children. Not go in buses. But that was something Nidhi really couldn’t afford right now. After internship, with a better income she might be able to get a loan. But right now… May be she should not have disposed off that ill-fated car all those years ago… But a ten year old Maruti 800 would hardly have been Siddhi’s idea of a car that would match the tastes of her friends. Nidhi smiled despite her worries. Siddhi! How status-conscious she was! How naive and gullible. But she was only thirteen. She had the right to be gullible. She had the right to be pampered. That right won’t be snatched away from her. Never! She would not have to grow up sooner than needed.

“Dr. Nidhi? Aap abhi yahan hain? School nahin gayin, Siddhi ko pick karne?” Ashutosh was surprised to find Nidhi on the terrace during the lunch hour.

Nidhi was facing away from the door that connected the terrace to the hospital corridor and was startled by Ashutosh’ voice.

“Sorry. Maine aapko phir dara diya lagta hai,” Ashutosh said sheepishly seeing her turn with a start.

She smiled weakly, “Nahin. Main theek hoon. Siddhi ki friend ke yahan party hai. To aaj main nahin ja rahi hoon.”

“Lunch kar liya aapne.”

“Nahin. Thodee der baad karoongi.”

“Are jaiye. Abhi hi to sab log canteen mein honge.”

“Haan. Woh bahut crowded hai. Isliye…”

“Dr. Nidhi. Aap kabhi apne colleagues ke saath lunch nahin kar paati hain. This is the time…”

“Isliye to awkward hai, Sir…” she bit her lips as she realized that she had revealed something she did not want to. She had earned the reputation of aloofnes amongst her colleagues and now she was not comfortable having lunch with them in the canteen. She would have felt like an outsider. But what will Ashutosh think now. “I’m sorry, Sir. Mera woh matlab nahin tha…”

“Chaliye mere saath,” Ashutosh said thoughtfully.

Nidhi resignedly walked behind him expecting to be led to the canteen, but was surprised when he walked towards his cabin instead. What was this about? A private lecture on the need to socialize with colleages?

But she was in for another surprise.

“Hiraman Kaka dher saara khana bana dete hain roz. Hamesha wapas le jaana padta hai. I should have another plate somewhere… Ye rahi. Dekhiye. Aapki pasand ka kuchh hai ya nahin is dabbe mein…”

“Dr. Ashutosh. Isko zaroorat nahin hai. Aap… Main canteen mein kha loongi. Aap iske liye mujhe yahan laye the? Maine socha…”

“Sit down Dr. Nidhi. Ye chhoti-moti baatein kissi ki maan lene se koi farq nahin padega aapki independence par, trust me.”

Nidhi gave in and served herself some food. Ashutosh also got some for himself and they started eating.

“Waise aapne kya socha tha?” Ashutosh restarted the conversation.

“Ji?”

“Aap kah rahi thi na ki jab main aapko yahan laya to aapne socha… Kya socha?”

“Kuchh nahin.”

“Ye chhoti-moti baatein bata dena se bhi koi farq nahin padega Nidhi.”

Nidhi sighed, “Mujhe laga tha ki aap mujhe samjhane ki koshish karenge ki mujhe apne colleagues ke saath socialize karna chahiye and all that.”

Ashutosh smiled, “Dr. Nidhi. Hum sab apni job mein kuchh assumptions ke saath kaam karte hain. The twenty-two year olds, who walk in through the hospital gates every year, to start their professional careers… Unke baare mein bhi mere kuchh assumptions hote hain. Normally woh sahi bhi hote hain. Woh log mostly achchhe aur studious students rahe hote hain, but duniya nahin dekhi hoti, responsibilities nahin li hoti, real life ka idea nahin hota unhein. Un assumptions ke hisaab se main unhein train karne ko koshish karta hoon. Sirf medicine mein hi nahin, balki overall professional life mein. Lekin…”

“Lekin?” Ashutosh had Nidhi’s attention.

“Lekin jitna maine aapko jaana hai, itni chhoti si umra mein hi aapne itni responsibilities nibhayi hain ki mujhe pata nahin aapke oopar normal rules apply karna fair hai ya nahin? Balki woh aap par apply hote bhi hain ki nahin? Aapko already itne important faisle lene ki aadat hai khud ke liye ki main aapko decision-making nahin sikha sakta. Aapne apne faisle khud liye hain. Aur galtiyan nahin ki hain. Aur itna kuchh karne ke baad agar aap kabhi koi galti kar bhi dein, to woh aapka haq hai.”

Nidhi was staring at him in disbelief by the time he finished. She felt a lump in her throat. She could not swallow her food any longer. And if she tried to do anything at all, she was sure she’d cry. She kept her plate on the table and walked out, not heeding Ashutosh asking her to stop.

Ashutosh was confused about what to do for a minute. Then he decided to look for her. He found her on the terrace. Even though she was facing away from him and he was at a distance, it wasn’t difficult to make out that she was crying. He debated with himself about what to do. Go to her or leave her alone. He decided on the latter. She had run away from him to cry. He shouldn’t impose himself on her. He came back.

Knock came on his door about fifteen minutes later.

“Yes Dr. Nidhi?” Ashutosh spoke as if nothing had happened earlier.

She looked uncomfortable and flustered, “I am sorry, Sir. Woh meri joothi plate yahan padi thi.”

“Don’t worry. Clean karwa di hai maine.”

She nodded and made to leave.

“Nidhi,” he stopped her, got up from his chair and walked to her, “Do baatein. Pahli ye ki tumhari duty abhi mere saath hai. Ward no. 2 mein. Jaldbaazi ki koi zaroorat nahin hai. You didn’t have your lunch properly. Aaraam se canteen mein kuchh kha kar aa jao.”

She nodded.

“Aur doosri ye ki sharing and getting support is not a sign of weakness. Agar tum mujhse share karna chaho to I would be very happy. Lekin mujh par nahin to kissi par to bharosa karo. Kissi se to share karo, support lo. Agar main kissi se tumhari jaan pahchaan karwa sakta hoon, ya kissi professional se hi baat karna chaho…”

“Agar share karna hoga,” she interrupted, “To aapse hi kar loongi.” She didn’t know why she said that. But it sounded right.

“I will wait for the day then.”

She nodded and went away.

“Sir. Main Siddhi ko… I mean apni sister ko pick karne ja rahi thi. Rahul ko bhi pick kar loon?”

“No. Thanks Dr. Nidhi. Uski maid wapas aa gayi hai. Woh use ghar le jayegi.”

“Okay Sir.”

“Dr. Nidhi?” She noticed that he had started using her first name instead of his usual practice of using the last name.

“Yes Sir?”

“Aap roz apni sister ko pick karti hain?”

“Ji.”

“But she is old enough to go home on her own.”

“Hum log saath mein lunch karte hain, Sir.”

“Isliye aap hospital canteen mein lunch nahin karti.”

“Ji,” she nodded looking apprehensive as if he would mind that. But he did not say anything. So, she left feeling relieved.

Ashutosh parked his car in the parking lot and walked towards the main building of Rahul’s school. It was the annual school picnic and the school authorities had asked parents to volunteer to accompany the kids to the picnic venue. Having a few parents around would be helpful for the teachers, as the kids on the picnic grounds could become a handful for them. Ashutosh had the day off; so he had decided to volunteer.

“Dr. Ashutosh?” he heard the familiar voice.

“Dr. Nidhi? Aaj to aapki duty thi.”

“Maine exchange kar li.”

“Yahan aane ke liye?”

“Ji.”

“That’s great,” Ashutosh said, but eyed her curiously. Why was she acting like a parent to her fairly grown up sister?

But he did not get a chance to continue the conversation. All the parents and teachers got busy in seating the kids on the buses, counting and recounting, giving instructions. Nidhi and Ashutosh were assigned to different buses; so they could not talk during the bus ride. Only after they disembarked at the venue and the kids got engaged in various activities, did he get a chance to talk to her again.

“Aap apni sister ki full-time guardian ki tarah hain,” he said cautiously, though he tried to appear casual.

“Guardian ki tarah nahin hoon, main uski guardian hoon.”

“Excuse me?”

“Woh aath saal ki thi jab hamare parents ki death ho gayi thi. Tab se main hi uski guardian hoon.” She said it as factually as if reporting a patient’s blood pressure to him.

Ashutosh was visibly startled. “I… I am sorry Dr. Nidhi.”

“It’s okay. Old story. She is doing fine.”

“I’m sure, she is. I’m sorry because I had no idea. And I could have said some things that hurt you…”

“No. You couldn’t have. I don’t give people power to hurt me,” her curt and stiff self was back.

Ashutosh’ mind was filled with a whirlwind of thoughts and he was hardly in a position to chat with her further. He tried to guess what Siddhi’s age was and if they were orphaned when she was eight, it must have been four to six years ago. Nidhi herself would have been a teenager then, herself in the need of love and care of parents. And she has been parenting her kid sister since then? Even at his age, when Rahul’s birth was a planned event of his life, he sometimes found it difficult to deal with a child as a single parent and this girl…. Is that what makes her so bitter? He stole a glance at her. She was looking fondly in the direction of her sister. Siddhi was playing volleyball with her friends. It was impossible not to notice the affectionate smile on Nidhi’s face, which was usually so devoid of anything resembling a smile. She definitely didn’t resent her sister’s responsibility. What was it then?

“Aap log wapas ghar kaise jayenge?” Ashutosh asked when they were back to the school from picnic. The parents who had not accompanied the kids on picnic had come to pick them up and the entire place was crowded again.

“Auto ya taxi mil jayegi, Sir.”

“Kaafi der ho gayi hai. Let me drop you. Car hai…”

“No. No Sir. That won’t be necessary. Aur phir Rahul ke sone ka time bhi ho raha hoga. Aap late ho jayenge.”

“It’s not a problem at all. Aur hamara hero abhi 11 baje se pahle nahin sone waala hai. Itni raat ko aap logon ka akele jaana theek nahin hai…”

“Sir. Hum hamesha jaate hain. Koi problem nahin hai. Right Siddhi?” Nidhi tried to get her sister to endorse her.

“Yeah Di. But you know… I am kind of tired…”

“Siddhi!” Nidhi was flustered.

“Dr. Nidhi. Please let me,” Ashutosh insisted.

He saw an expression of helplessness and regret on her face as she nodded. Obviously she was not happy at the situation. For a moment he felt bad about offering to drop them. It seemed to have hurt her self-respect. And yet… not making an offer would not have been like him. It would not have been like anyone with any sense of responsibility. It made no sense that they should be scouting for an auto this late, after a tiring day, when he could have dropped them easily.

“Sir. Aap please andar aaiye na,” Nidhi said when he pulled up the car in front of their house.

“Nahin Dr. Nidhi. Aap log thake hue honge. Aaraam kijiye. Main phir kissi din…”

“Sir. Chai to main bhi piyungi hi aur khana bhi banega hi. Agar aapko taqleef na ho to please andar chaliye aur hamare saath hi dinner kar lijiye. Abhi ghar wapas ja kar kahan dinner ka intezaam karenge?”

Hiraman Kaka would have taken care of dinner at his home. But he did not want to say it and make her feel small. At the same time he did not like the idea of her slogging away on dinner for four people.

“I have a better idea. Hum ander chalte hain. Aap hamare liye chai banaiye aur dinner ke liye hum pizza order kar dete hain,” he said.

“Pizza! Yes!” Rahul and Siddhi exclaimed in almost in chorus.

Nidhi looked unsure, but finally nodded.

Rahul happily followed Siddhi to her room. Ashutosh ordered pizza, while Nidhi made tea. The house was big for two people and Ashutosh guessed that it must have been built by their parents and was not rented.

“Rahul abhi aath saal ka hai and he gets a handful for me so often. It was very brave of you to take the responsibility of your sister at that age,” Ashutosh said while having tea.

“Main brave banne ki koshish nahin kar rahi thi. I just did what I had to.”

“That is still incredible. In fact, more so.”

Nidhi did not react to it and continued sipping her tea without meeting his eyes. Ashutosh fidgeted feeling uncomfortable at the silence, but the doorbell came to his resuce.

“Must be pizza delivery. I will get it,” Nidhi got up.

“No. Nidhi. Wait. I will pay for it,” Ashutosh stopped her.

“Sir. Aap bhool rahe hain ki aap mere ghar mein hain. I am the host.”

“Aur aap bhool rahi hain ki main aapka senior hoon.Sit down.”

“But…”

“No if’s and but’s,” he declared and went to the door.

Nidhi looked on feeling slightly annoyed with herself. What was happening to her today? She was losing control, giving in too much to Ashutosh. First revealing about her parent’s death, then the ride home, then the idea of pizza for dinner and now him paying for it. She didn’t like the idea of paying over 500 Rs. for a meal of pizza. Her father’s insurance and property had left her enough to pay for her own education and their normal upkeep. But she couldn’t afford to be reckless. She was saving for Siddhi’s education.

She came out of her thoughts when she saw Ashutosh struggling with several large boxes of pizza, garlic bread and cakes.

“Aapne kitna saara order kar diya hai?”

“Cold drinks darwaaze ke paas rakhi hain.”

“He bhagwan!” she exclaimed and rushed to the door so that Ashutosh didn’t have do all the work himself.

She stood with her hands on the hips and stared at the pizza boxes and accompaniments arranged on the dining table.

“Ye chaalish logon ka khana hai, Sir. Yahan sirf chaar log hain, poora hospital nahin.”

Ashutosh liked it that for once her words were not measured and calculated. She just spoke whatever came to her mind.

“I’m sorry. Lekin maine socha ki sab ki pasand alag alag hogi. To mujhe jo samajh mein aaya order kar diya. Jo bach jaye fridge mein rakh dijiyega.”

“Ek hafte tak mere ghar mein pizza festival chalega. Khair. I will call the kids.”

Her marvelled at her motherly expressions and language. It was cute coming from a twenty-two year old.

Nidhi tossed and turned in her bed till late that night. Something about the day was making her uncomfortable. Something about Ashutosh was making her uncomfortable. Siddhi was elated. At the ride in Mercedes. At the pizza dinner that Nidhi hardly indulged her in. And it bothered her that the source of her elation came from the pockets of someone else. From the pockets of Dr. Ashutosh. To make the matters worse, he came across as a dependable person. Of course, he did, Nidhi told herself. He was used to being a parent. All parents came across as dependable. It didn’t mean they were actually so.

Regaining Trust (Part 2)

“Sister. Pakadiye ise kas ke. Dawai le hi nahin rahi hai. Zabardasti deni padegi.” Kabir was struggling with a six year old patient.

“Kabir,” Nidhi chided him, “Bachchon ko aise dara-dhamka kar kuchh nahin hota hai. Kaun si dawai deni hai, batao mujhe.”

“Tum darane-dhamkaane ki baatein kar rahi ho,” Kabir laughed good humouredly, “Tumse to bade bhi darte hain Dr. Nidhi Verma. Bachchon ka kya hoga?”

“Badon ko darane ki zaroorat bhi hoti hai,” Nidhi mumbled, clearly not enjoying the joke.

Kabir shrugged and walked off to attend to other patients. Nidhi wasn’t aware that Ashutosh was standing near the door of the ward and was observeing them. He continued to watch as she sat down with the girl, soothed her down, distracted her with little jokes and games and finally made her have the medicine. She was still smiling when she got up from the patient’s bed and made her way to the door, only to encourter Ashutosh hardly a meter away from the bed. When did he come?

“Aap muskurati bhi hain?” Ashutosh said.

“Ji?” she was startled.

“Pahli baar aapko smile karte hue dekha hai. Warna mujhe to lagta tha ki aap yahan bilkul tortured feel karti hain.”

“Aisa kuchh nahin hai, Sir.”

“Aapse kuchh baat karni thi. Agar aap free hain to mere office mein chalein?”

“Ji.”

“Lunch par sab aapko miss kar rahe the,” Ashutosh said.

And she smiled. For the second time in the day. But her smile was sarcastic this time.

“Itna mujhe pata hai ki koi mujhe miss nahin kar raha tha. But thanks for trying to be sweet. Coming to the point – I am sorry. Mujhe maaloon hai mujhe wahan rahna chahiye tha. It was rude that you were invited and I was not there…”

“Nahin. Point ye nahin hai ki main invited tha. Mujhe pata chala ki aap kabhi bhi lunch baaki logon ke saath nahin karti hain. Ya otherwise bhi apne colleagues ke saath zyada mingle nahin karti hain…”

“I don’t think ki is baare mein koi rule hai.”

“Rule nahin hai Dr. Verma. But har workplace ki kuchh dynamics hoti hai, culture hoti hai. Aur sabse badee baat social aspect hota hai. Ye jo profession hai, ye hamein emotionally, physically aur mentally drain kar sakta hai. Fighting diseases and accidents day and night. Hamein support ki zaroorat hoti hai. Aur immediate support apne colleagues se milta hai. Agar aap unhein alienate kar dengi to aapko hi problem hogi.”

“Agar baat sirf meri problems ki hai to mujhe apni problems se deal karna aata hai. Uske liye aapko chinta karne ki zaroorat nahin hai.”

“I appreciate your self-reliance. Bahut achchhi quality hai. Lekin… I get a feeling ki koi cheez hai jo aapko pareshaan kar rahi hai. Maine abhi-abhi aapko patient ke saath dekha. Aisa to nahin hai ki aap logon se connect karne mein capable nahin hain. In fact, aap kaafi capable hai. Pahle bhi bachchon ke saath maine observe kiya hai. Phir colleagues ke saath kyon problem hai aapko? Are you hyper competitive?”

“Am I obliged to answer?”

“Would you feel more comfortable talking to a woman? I can ask Dr. Mallika or…”

“Aap ye sab kyon poochh rahe hain? Meri performance mein koi problem hai?”

“Nahin. Bilkul bhi nahin. You are doing very well. But as a boss and as a mentor I care about things beyond performance…”

“Dr. Ashutosh,” she interrupted impatiently, “I report to you. Aap mere boss hain. Meri performance mein koi problem ho, koi shikayat ho to aap mujhse jo chahe kah sakte hain. Lekin meri life mein koi mentor nahin hai. I am sorry, but main life-coaching lene ke mood mein nahin hoon. Na to Dr. Mallika se, na hi aapse. Can I leave now?”

He nodded. There was no getting into this girl’s head. She left.

“Rahul? Beta aap yahan kaise? Main abhi nikal hi raha tha aapko pick karne ke liye,” Ashutosh was hurrying out of the hospital to pick his son up from the school. The maid who looked after him was on leave that day. So, he was surprised and scared to see that Rahul had already reached hospital.

“Don’t worry Dr. Ashutosh,” he heard Nidhi’s voice, as she approached them, “Rahul mere saath aaya hai.”

“Aur humne khoob enjoy kiya raaste mein. Maine Nidhi Auntie ko tic-tac-toe mein paanch baar haraya. Hai na?”

“Of course. Rahul genius jo hai.” The girl who was talking so affectionately to his eight-year old son was definitely not the Dr. Nidhi Verma he knew. She appeared rather normal and jovial. But then she was so with kids quite often. But how did…

She read his confusion, “Sorry. Maine explain nahin kiya. Meri sister bhi Rahul ke school mein padhti hai. Usse badi hai. She is in class 8th. But both of them participate in the drama group. So, they know each other and I know him. Main apni sister ko pick karne gayi thi to pata chala ki Rahul ko bhi yahin aana hai, but aapne teacher ko phone kiya tha ki aapko der ho jayegi. To main ise apne saath le aayi.”

“To aap aur Rahul ek doosre ko pahle se jaante hain?”

“Papa. Maine aapko bataya tha na Nidhi Auntie ne drama group ke liye cake banaya tha annual function ke baad.”

Ashutosh grinned, “Nidhi Auntie? No wonder I could never guess. Beta auntie bulane ke liye ye thodi young hain. Aap inhein Didi bulaiye.”

“Rahen dijiye, Sir. Did bulane ke liye main thodee old hoon. Sab bachche mujhe auntie hi bulate hain. I don’t mind. Main chalti hoon. Lunch ka time khatam ho raha hai.”

“Sure. And thanks Dr. Nidhi.”

“No problem, Sir.”

“So, aap apni sister ke bahut close hain?” Nidhi was reading in the common after taking her round in the ward for the night duty, when Ashutosh walked in.

“Sir?” Nidhi was startled and could do nothing more than acknowledge him.

“Mere aane se aap hamesha pareshaan ho jaati hain.”

“Aap hamesha aate hi koi sawaal daag dete hain.” Ashutosh thought he saw a faint smile on her face as she retorted in a tone softer than usual for her.

“Aur aapko mere sawaal achche nahin lagte.”

“Achchha-bure ki baat nahin hai. Mere paas usually koi dhang ka jawaab nahin hota,” she was stiff again.

“Khair. Aapko pata tha ki Rahul mera beta hai?”

“Ji.”

“Aapne kabhi bataya nahin ki aap use jaanti hain?”

“Kabhi zaroorat nahin hui.”

“Zaroorat?” Ashutosh laughed, “Aap har kaam zaroorat ke hisaab se karti hain?”

She didn’t reply, just bit her lips.

“Sorry. Main mazaak kar raha tha. But Rahul aapke baare mein bahut baatein karta hai. Hospital mein hi nahin, bahar bhi aap bachchon ki favourite hain. Mujhe bas kabhi realize hi nahin hua ki uski Nidhi Auntie aap hain.”

She smiled weakly.

“Dr. Verma. Aap… Oh! Kya aap nahin chahti thi ki mujhe pata chale? Ki Rahul aapko jaanta hai?”

She sighed, “Mujhe nahin pata ki main kya chahti thi.”

“Aapko use laane ki koi zaroorat nahin thi phir. Kyon le aayin aap? Maine teacher ko phone kar diya tha…”

“Bachchon ko akelapan bardasht nahin hota, Sir. Woh ruansa ho raha tha. Main use chhod kar nahin aa payi.”

“Thanks. And sorry. Uski maid aaj chhutti par thi aur main kuchh emergencies ki wajah se time se nahin ja paaya…”

“It’s okay, Sir. Mujhe pata tha ki aap busy hain. Isliye to main use le aayi.”

“Yeah. Lekin ye baat mujhe pata hai, isse agar aap uncomfortable hain, to phir maan lijiye ki mujhe nahin pata hai. Maine kabhi iska zikr nahin karoonga.”

Ashutosh got up to leave. Nidhi also got up and stopped him, “Dr. Ashutosh. I’m sorry. Mujhe galat mat samajhiye. Main koi…”

“Tumhein galat nahin samajh raha hoon, Nidhi,” he suddenly addressed her by her first name and used ‘tum’ instead of ‘aap’, “Tum kuchh galat to kabhi karti nahin ho. Tumhein galat kaun samajh sakta hai? Lekin jab bhi tumhein dekhta hoon, tumse baat karta hoon, kahin na kahin mujhe ye mahsoos hota rahta hai ki apne andar kuchh daba rakha hai tumne. Jaise umra se zyada serious aur mature banne ke liye you are trying very hard, jaise kissi cheez se khud ko protect kar rahi ho, jaise koi laava bhara ho tumhare andar. Mujhe pata hai ki tumhein advice pasand nahin hai, lekin phir bhi… Main ye nahin kah raha ki tum mere saath share karo. Lekin isse pahle ki ye laava volcano ban kar phat jaye, kissie se saath share karo. Thandha karo ise.”

He went away and Nidhi stood rooted to her place for several seconds after that. She was stunned and tears clouded her vision. How did he know? How did he understand?

Regaining Trust (Part 1)

“Would any of you like to help Surgeon Hussain in closing up?” Dr. Ashutosh Mathur asked the interns, who were on their first day of duty. The patient on the table was a three-year old girl, who had been badly injured in a car accident.

“Ashutosh!” Shahid Hussain, pediatric surgeon at Kotnis General Hospital, looked at him incredulously. He hadn’t been in favour of making interns even watch the operation. Seeing a small kid so mutiliated and so close to death was disturbing even for many experience doctors and surgeons. These were interns, fresh out of college, on their first day of duty.

As Shahid had expected, none of the interns came forward. Most of them were visibly disturbed. And as if to prove his point further, one of them, Priyanka rushed away from OT because she felt like puking.

“Sir, May I?” suddenly they heard a calm, composed voice.

“Are you sure, Dr….” Shahid was not confident.

“Nidhi. Nidhi Verma, Sir. I can do it.”

Ashutosh also looked surprised. Although he had asked, he hadn’t expected anyone to take up the offer. But he nodded to Shahid and he moved to let Nidhi stand near the patient and do the stitching. Both the senior doctors, as well as the interns, stared in awe as Nidhi stitched the patient up without showing any signs of hesitation or repulsion. Her hands did not tremble even once.

When they came out of the OT, few more interns rushed to the washrooms. Priyanka was standing just outside the OT looking pale and exhausted.

“Are you okay, Priyanka?” asked Kabir, another intern.

“I’m fine now. But… It was… embarrassing…”

“Don’t worry, yaar. Hamara pahle din tha. Aur situation was horrible. Hum sab ki halat kharaab thi. Thanks God, the child is out of danger now.”

“Too much burn on the skin, though,” Nidhi said matter-of-factly, “I hope her family can support an extended period of reconstructive surgery.”

“That aside Nidhi. You are one of a kind. How could you be so calm and cool? I was feeling nauseated seeing so much blood.”

Nidhi did not reply to that, just shrugged and walked off to the common room. But she was interrupted by Dr. Ashutosh on her way.

“Dr. Verma.”

“Sir? Sorry Sir. I didn’t see you,” Nidhi had indeed not, although she had just crossed him. She was lost in her own world.

“No problem. Main bas ye kah raha tha ki you did well in OT. Honestly, I hadn’t expected anyone to step up. It was a difficult situation, especially for youngsters…”

“I am old enough to be a doctor Dr. Ashutosh. I am old enough to handle an injured patient,” she replied. Ashutosh could not help notice that there was no humour in her voice. She hadn’t smiled even earlier when he had appreciated her. There was something strangely haughty about her.

“Good. Keep it up,” he mumbled and walked away to his cabin, which was located down the corridor. Before entering his room, however, he glanced back at her. She was walking on with the same stiff posture as earlier and seemingly unaware of her surroundings.

“Agar aap abhi ke abhi chup nahin hui, to main aapke bachche ka ilaaj nahin karoongi. Ise aise hi hospital se bahar bhej doongi.” Ashutosh stopped in his tracks as he heard Nidhi’s strict admonition to a mother accompanying an injured child. The pediatric department was short on staff for last few days as many had gone away during festival season. And for some reason there were far too many walk-in patients that day. So, as the head of the department, Ashutosh had asked interns and other doctors to start treating people with minor problems in the waiting area itself. He was walking back to his examination room after a break when he had heard Nidhi.

The mother was so surprised with her threat that she indeed stopped crying. But she could not help retorting, “Ye kya tareeka hai baat karne ka, Doctor?”

“Tareeka jo bhi hai, aapke aur aapke bachche ki bhalai ke liye hai. Zara si injury hai. Lekin aapka beta aapko rote hue dekh kar ghabra raha hai. Agar aap khud ka khayaal nahin rakh sakti to iska kaise rakhengi?”

Nidhi didn’t make it easy for the mother to calm down with her confrontational tone, but her argument didn’t leave room for any opposition either. The woman stayed silent as Nidhi attended to the kid’s wounds.

“Dr. Verma,” Ashutosh approached them, “Is patient ko attend karne ke baad mere cabin mein mujhse miliye.”

“Okay, Sir.”

“Aap unse aise baat kyon kar rahi thi?” Ashutosh asked sternly.

“Maine galat kya kaha?”

“Galat nahin kaha, lekin yahi baat pyaar se bhi samjhayi ja sakti thi.”

“Woh koi bachchi nahin hain. Agar bachcha paida kiya hai to uska bhala-bura sochna aana chahiye. Agar nahin aata hai to she deserves to be treated like that. At least chup to hui.”

“You are being very judgmental, Dr. Verma.”

“Yes. I am. Agar aapko koi complain mile to aap freely mujhe punish kar sakte hain. Can I leave now?”

Ashutosh sighed. She was stubborn. It would be difficult to tackle her. But as a doctor, she had great potential. So, he was ready to work hard on her.

He nodded and Nidhi left.

“Thank you for inviting me to your lunch doctors,” Ashutosh had joined the interns for lunch that day at their invitation.

“Thank you for coming, Sir. It’s our pleasure,” replied one of them.

“Sab log aa gaye hain?”

“Yes Sir. Hum log khana shuru kar sakte hain.”

Ashutosh looked around and then asked hesitantly, “Dr. Verma?”

“Oh Nidhi! Woh lunch hamare saath nahin karti.”

“Kyon?”

“Woh kuchh bhi hamare saath nahin karti,” Neetu muttered under her breath.

“Shut up Neetu. Use kuchh kaam hota hoga,” Priyanka defended her.

Ashutosh sensed some hostility towards Nidhi in the group. He was not surprised as she definitely was not much of a people’s person. He would have to speak to her, but he decided to change the topic then, “So tell me. How do you all like working here? Any complaints?”

Desires of Imperfection

“Dr. Nidhi,” Mallika stopped her just as she was about to leave after her duty.

“Ji Dr. Mallika?”

“Aapki duty…”

“…khatam ho gai hai,” Nidhi said hastily, “Main Dr. Kabir ko handover kar diya hai.” She was scared that Mallika would find some reason to scold her. So, she felt the need to explain at the outset that she was not shirking her duty and was leaving only after it was over.

“I know. Mujhe aapse kuchh baat karni hai… Not about work.”

“Ji kahiye.”

“Yahan nahin. Let’s go someplace quiet.”

Nidhi raised her eyebrows as Mallika turned to go to the terrace, but she followed her anyway.

“Dr. Nidhi. Mujhe ghuma-phira kar baatein karne ki aadat nahin hai. Isliye saaf-saaf kah deti hoon. Aap jo Dr. Ashutosh ke saath karne ki koshish kar rahi hain, wo sahi nahin hai.”

Nidhi was flustered for a moment. What was that about? “Kya matlab? Main… kya karne ki koshish kar rahi hoon aur kya sahi nahin hai?”

“Aapka Ashutosh ke kareeb jaane ki koshish karna…”

“Dr. Mallika,” Nidhi shouted, “Aapko hosh bhi hai ki aap kya bol rahi hain? Pahli baat to main aisa kuchh kar nahin rahi hoon. Doosri baat ki kar bhi rahi hoti to aapko uske baare mein bolne ka koi haq nahin hai…”

“Ashutosh mera dost hai. Barah saalon se jaanti hoon use Nidhi. Agar uske saath kuchh galat hoga to mera haq hai ki main woh hone se rokun.”

“Dr. Ashutosh koi…” Nidhi started to give a stinging reply, but held herself back, “Jawaab dena mujhe aata hai Dr. Mallika. Lekin main itni kadwi baat apne munh se nikaalna nahin chahti. Behtar hoga ki aap mujhe majboor na karein.”

“Dr. Nidhi. Mard bahar se to bahut tough dikhte hain. Lekin unke andar hazaaron insecurities aur weaknesses bhari hoti hain. I am afraid ki unmein se kuchh ko aapne Ashutosh ke andar kured diya hai. Aur jaane-anjaane he has started falling for you. But if you care for him, or at least pretend to care for him, then you should stop this. Aap dono ka koi mel nahin hai.”

Nidhi was amused and said sarcastically “Jab aapne itne assumptions apne man mein bana hi liye hain, aur kuchh bhi bolne se aap nahin hi chookengi, to mujhe ye bhi bata hi dijiye ki kyon mel nahin hai hamara? Aaj kaam aaye na aaye, shayad future mein kabhi ye knowledge mere kaam aa jayegi.”

“Zaroor aayegi Nidhi. Life partner hamare baraabar ka koi hona chahiye, jise agar hum kabhi sahara dete hain, to zaroorat padne par usse sahara le bhi sakein. Tum Ashutosh ke saamne bachchi ho Nidhi. Too immature, too weak. Tum kabhi unke saath kadam se kadam mila kar nahin chal paogi, unki pareshaaniyan, unke issue nahin samajh paogi. To behtar yahi hoga ki apne youth aur apni khoobsoorti ke dum par tum Ashutosh ke kareeb pahunchne ki koshish na karo. Ye disastrous hoga, tum dono ke liye,” Mallika walked out after saying this. But her little speech did affect Nidhi.

Nidhi was walking back from the terrace lost in thoughts, when she heard his voice, “Dr. Nidhi.”

“Y… Yes Sir,” she stammered.

“Kya baat hai? Koi pareshaani hai? Aisa kaise ho gaya ki aap muskura nahin rahi hain, chahak nahin rahi hain?” Ashutosh asked playfully.

Nidhi wondered for a moment. This playful Ashutosh was indeed very different from the the Ashutosh she was introduced to in her initial days at the hospital. This Ashutosh was much more relaxed and lively. She had admitted to herself that her opinion of Ashutosh had undergone a sea chance since her first day at the hospital. But was it her opinion that had changed? Or had he himself changed? Why?

“Dr. Nidhi. Aap theek to hain?” Ashutosh asked with concern, when he saw Nidhi staring at him without saying anything.

“Yes Sir. Main bilkul theek hoon.”

“Preoccupied hain?”

“Main kuchh soch rahi thi. Lekin koi problem ki baat nahin hai.”

“Aapki duty khatm ho gayi hai?”

“Ji.”

“To agar aap free hain to coffee peete hain. Aur saath mein ye bhi pata lagate hain ki kya baat aapko pareshaan kar rahi hai?”

But Nidhi was back in element by then, “Coffee to zaroor peete hain. Lekin aap ye mat sochiyega ki aapko koi aisa secret pata chal jayega jisse mujhe pareshaan kiya ja sakta hai. Mujhe to aap bhi kabhi pareshaan nahin kar paye. Koi aur kya karega?”

Ashutosh laughed, “Aapne to mera plan banne se pahle hi us par paani pher diya.”

Mallika saw them walking into the canteen. Nidhi noticed a fuming Mallika and flinched a bit, but Ashutosh didn’t notice her.

Priyanka came bustling into the common room where Nidhi and Rangnath were sitting.

“He bhagwaan! Ab aap hi mujhe Dr. Ashutosh se bacha sakte hain,” she prayed dramatically.

“Kya hua Priyanka?”

“Late ho gayi yaar. Meri duty Dr. Ashutosh ke saath lagi hai. Aur mujhe ye wedding dresses ki naap deni aaj zaroori thi. Woh to mujhe maar hi daalenge.”

“Itne bure bhi nahin hain Priyanka. Explain kar dena, kuchh nahin kahenge.”

“Ab Dr. Nidhi ne kaha to theek hi kah rahi hongi Dr. Priyanka. Ghabraiye mat,” Rangnath interrupted.

“Dr. Rangnath!” Nidhi glared at him,

“Mera matlab hai ki Dr. Nidhi sahi hi kah rahi hain. Dr. Hardstone kaafee badal gaye hain pichhle kuchh mahinon mein. Hansne-muskurane lage hain, jokes bhi maarte kabhi-kabhi aur daantne ki propensity bhi kam ho gayi hai unki. To aap befikra ho kar jaiye.”

Priyanka had finished putting her bag and other stuff in the locker by then and had gulped down one glass of water, “Main chalti hoon. Unka character analysis karne ka time nahin hai mere paas.”

Nidhi turned to Rangnath after Priyanka had left, “Dr. Rangnath, kya Dr. Ashutosh sach much badal gaye hain? Matlab pahle woh aise nahin the?”

“Bilkul badal gaye hain. Mujhe behtar kaun jaanta hai? Aaj kal kahin gandgi dikhti hai hospital mein, to shanti te use saaf karne ko bolte hain. Pahle to saare staff ki shaamat aa jati thi. Badi khushkismat hain aap…”

“Ji?”

“Mera matlab hai ki aapka batch bada khushkismat hai. Aapko iske pahle interns ki halat dekhni chahiye thi. Real Dr. Hardstone ko to aapne hardly dekha hai. Dekha hai – shuru ke dinon mein. Par phir to…”

“Shuru mein main galtiyan bhi to bahut karti thi, to unhein daantna hi padta…” Nidhi murmured, more to herself than to Rangnath.

Rangnath laughed funnily, “Of course. Yahi wajah hogi. Ab to aap hi nahin, saare interns, aur saare staff members experts ho gaye hain. Dr. Ashutosh ko khush rakhne mein.”

“Aap jo kah rahe hain, woh to kahna nahin chahte. Saaf saaf bataiye ki kya kahna chahte hain?”

“Surajmukhi ke phool ke baare mein jaanti hain aap?”

“Ji haan,” Nidhi said impatiently.

“To ye bhi pata hoga ki woh suraj ki direction mein ghoomta rahta hai.”

“Iska mere sawaal se ya Dr. Ashutosh se kya matlab hai?”

“Aisa hai ki Dr. Ashutosh bhi aaj kal surajmukhi ke phool ho gaye hain. Ab kaun se suraj ki taraf ghoomte hain, ye mujhse mat poochhiye. Chhote munh, badi baat hogi. Lekin haan. Pediatrics department ke saare doctors, staff, nurses wagerah-wagerah ko us suraj ke saamne roz surya-namaskaar zaroor karna chahiye. Unki wajah se unke hardstone boss aaj kal kaafi tolerable ho gaye hain.”

“Dr. Ranghnath. Aap doctor kaise ban gaye? Writer hona chahiye tha. Aur aap ekdum classics ke writer bante. Jo kissi ko samajh mein nahin aata, lekin jiski sab taareef karte.”

“Uda lijiye mazaak. Ab kismat ka rona rone ki meri aadat nahin hai. To kya bataun ki doctor kaise bana. Chaliye khair. Dr. Hardstone, softstone bhale hi ho gaye ho, pighalne waali ice-cream abhi bhi nahin hue hain. To mujhe kaam par wapas jaana chahiye. Bye. Phir milenge… chalte-chalte.”

“Bye Dr. Rangnath,” Nidhi said smilingly. It was difficult not to be amused by Rangnath’s antics. She looked at her watch. Her break was over and she also walked towards the ward.

“Doctor Sahib. Mera bachcha theek to ho jayega na?” Nidhi was interrupted during her ward visit by a woman.

“Ji aap kiske saath hain?” she asked patiently.

She pointed towards the bed besides which Nidhi was standing. Nidhi was surprised, “Aap iski Maa hain?”

The woman nodded.

“Lekin ye to orphanage, mera matlab hai anaath ashram mein tha.”

The woman started crying, “Kya karti main? Iske pita ko guzre chaar saal ho gaye hain. Main chhote mote kaam kar ke guzara karti hoon. Aur ye din bhar yun hi idhar udhar bhatakta rahta tha. Kissi ne kaha ki anath ashram mein daal do. Achchhe se pal jayega aur wahan iski padhai likhkai bhi ho jayegi. Iske kal ka soch kar maine ise khud se alag kar diya.”

Nidhi was pained to hear her story. She noticed Ashutosh overhearing their conversation. His face was tense. He didn’t come to them and walked out of the ward. Nidhi returned her attention to the woman, “Aap chinta mat kijiye. Ye bilkul theek ho jayega. Beemari kabhi-kabhi zyada dinon se ho to gahri ho jaati hai. To thoda samay lagega. Lekin ye theek ho jayega.”

After doing her rounds she went to Ashutosh’ office, “May I come in, Sir?”

“Please come in Dr. Nidhi. Ah! I was waiting for my tea,” he smiled. Whenever Nidhi came to him for no other reason, she brought tea as an alibi.

She smiled and sat down without waiting for his invitation. Ashutosh didn’t mind that she was carefree around him. He liked it!

“Aapne us orhpanage waale bachche ki Ma ki baat suni?”

Ashutosh stopped smiling, “Haan. suni.”

“Mujhe aisa kyon laga ki aap usse gussa ho gaye?”

“Shayad isliye Dr. Nidhi ki main gussa ho gaya tha.”

“Kyon gussa ho gaye aap? Woh to apni taraf se bachche ke bhale ki hi soch rahi thi.”

“Haan. Lekin phir bhi main gussa ho gaya. Kyonki… shayad main zindagi se hi gussa hoon.”

“Aur aisa kyon hai?”

Ashutosh didn’t reply immediately. He looked at her for a moment and then said with a sad smile, “Aapko kya lagta hai? Log kyon gussa hote hain zindagi se?”

“Mujhe to samajh nahin aata. Ab jinke paas khane ki kami ho, sar ke oopar chhat na ho, woh log zindagi se gussa ho to samah mein aata hai. Woh aurat jise apne bachche ko orphanage mein daalna pada kyonki woh use paal nahin sakti thi, woh zindagi se gussa ho to samajh mein aata hai. Lekin aap kyon gussa hain? Aapke paas kis cheez ki kami hai? Aur agar koi cheez nahin hai aapke paas to use paane mein kya dikkat hai?”

Ashutosh looked hurt and angry at her question, “Rahne dijiye Dr. Nidhi. Aap nahin samjhengi… Aur achchha hi hoga agar aapko samajhne ki zaroorat bhi na pade apni zindagi mein.”

“Lekin main samajhna chahti hoon. Kya aap meri help nahin kar sakte?”

“Nahin,” Ashutosh’ curtness surprised Nidhi, “Kuchh cheezein experience se hi seekhi jaati hain. Aur woh abhi aapke paas nahin hai.”

Nidhi was flustered and didn’t know what to do for a while. Then she muttered, “Main chalti hoon,” and left his office.

Ashutosh looked after her sadly.

‘Dr. Mallika theek kah rahi thi,’ Nidhi thought to herself while sititng in the common room after doing her rounds for the night duty, ‘Main Dr. Ashutosh ke saamne bahut immature hoon. Woh to aisa hi samajhte hain. Main bekaar mein hi unse zyada sawaal poochhne lagi. Woh mujhe kyon kuchh batayenge bhala? Bekaar mein maine apni insult bhi karwai aur unka bhi mood kharaab kiya.’

She had been on the duty on the shift before that too and was very tired. She sat on the chair and closed her eyes as she thought about all this.

“Dr. Nidhi,” Ashutosh’ voice brought her out of her reverie and she jumped out of the chiar.

“Sir, aap? I am sorry… Main so nahin rahi thi…”

“Calm down. Baithiye. Please,” Ashutosh said courtesouly and sat down a chair himself.

“Ji…” Nidhi was still flustered, but she sat down.

“I’m sorry,” both of them said in chorus. Ashutosh laughed at that, while Nidhi just stared at him in surprise.

“Aap kyon sorry bol rahi hain?” Ashutosh asked.

“Jo din mein hua uske liye. Mujhe aise intrude nahin karna chahiye tha… Lekin aap kyon…”

“Jo din mein hua uske liye,” Ashuosh replied, “Mujhe aapse aise rudely baat nahin karni chahiye thi.”

“Nahin,” she replied hastily, “Aapko sorry bolne ki zaroorat nahin hai. Maine aapki baat ka bilkul bhi bura nahin maana. Aap theek hi kah rahe the…”

Ashutosh laughed again, “Yeah. Dr. Hardstone ki daant ki to aadat ho jaani chahiye sabko, right?”

Nidhi’s eyes widened in surprise, “Aapko pata hai?”

“Kya?”

“Ye nick name… Dr. Hardstone…”

Ashutosh laughed out loud this time, “Come on Dr. Nidhi. Aapko sach mein lagta hai ki is hospital mein, at least is department mein kya chalta hai woh mujhe pata nahin hai…”

“Nahin… I mean…” Nidhi’s voice trailed as she couldn’t think of what to say and she looked embarrassed.

“Khair. I thought I owed an answer,” Ashutosh became serious.

“Kaisa answer?” Nidhi asked.

“Us question ka answer jo aapne mujhse din mein poochha tha. Aap sach mein jaanna chahti hain?”

“Haan… Main jaanna to chahti hoon… Lekin agar aapko sahi lage tabhi…”

“Dr. Nidhi. Us aurat ki baaton ne mujhe apni zindagi ka jo sabse pahla lamha yaad hai, usmein wapas pahuncha diya. Aur woh lamha, uski yaadein bahut achchhi nahin hai. Orphanage ke cluttered rooms, zameen par bichhe hue naam-matra ke bistar, khana khane ke liye line mein lagna… Halanki ab peechhe mud kar dekhta hoon to lagta hai ki jo log wahan par the hamare liye, unke intentions to achchhe hi the. Lekin phir bhi dus logon ka staff sau se zyada bachchon ke liye maa-baap ki kami kahan door kar sakta hai? Woh akelapan jo maine tab mahsoos kiya tha, woh jaise mere dil mein ghar kar gaya hai Dr. Nidhi. Aur kabhi nahin nikla…”

“Aap orphanage mein the?” Nidhi was shocked.

“Yes… Aur Baba mujhe wahan se ek din le aaye the. Woh bhi akele the, aur main bhi. Unhone mujhe bahut pyaar diya, mere akelepan ko door sa kar diya. Hum dono ne saath mein ek duniya banai… Aur phir ek din maine Baba ko kho diya. Doctor hoon, iske liye emotionally taiyaar tha… Lekin jaate-jaate Baba ne apni ek sabse important nishani mujhse chheen li. Use kuchh ajnabiyon ke haath de diya. Aisa laga ki woh mujhe ahsaas kara gaye ki main unka apna nahin tha. Bachpan ki jo tanhaiyan itne saalon se unke pyaar mein dab gayi thi, woh phir bahar aa gayi. Janm dene waalon ne to kabhi rishte nibhaye nahin mere saath, phir Baba ne bhi… Rishton par se phir se bharosa uth gaya mera. Aur bas…”

Suddenly he stopped and smiled sadly, “Main aapko bore kar raha hoon shayad.”

“Nahin. Aisa kyon kah rahe hain aap,” Nidhi said earnestly, “I am really sorry Dr. Ashutosh. Mujhe mahsoos ho raha hai ki mera sawaal aapko kitna bura laga hoga. I am really sorry for that. Aur aapke Baba ki nishani… Kya use wapas paane ka koi tareeka nahin hai?”

“Koshish kar raha hoon. Aur ek din use pa kar hi rahunga. Jis din mil jayegi, shayad main apni life se better cope kar sakoonga.”

“Main pray karoongi ki woh aapko zaroor mile. And I am sorry. Jaane-anjaane maine aapko bahut hurt kiya.”

“No. No Nidhi,” Ashutosh addressed her by her first name for the first time, “Uski zaroorat nahin hai. Kyonki jaane-anjaane tumne mujhe khushiyan bhi bahut di hain. Aur bahut kuchh sikhaya bhi hai.”

“Maine?” Nidhi laughed slightly with embarrassment, “Aap shayad mujhe achchha feel karane ki koshish kar rahe hain. Maine aapke liye kya kiya hai? Aur main aapko sikha kya sakti hoon bhala?”

“Wahi jo main bhool gaya tha. Apne aaj mein jeena, khush rahna aur logon par bharosa karna?”

Nidhi stared at him in disbelief.

Ashutosh had to speak again when he noticed her, “Ab aankhein itni badi badi kar ke mat dekhiye. Kahin nikal na aayen?”

“Na… Nahin… Main to… bas…” Nidhi muttered nervously, “Main ward mein jaati hoon. Round lene ka time ho gaya hai.” she rushed out of the common room and Ashutosh smiled after her. Gosh! How adorable and cute she was.

Nidhi had to take a few deep breaths after reaching the ward to calm her nerves down. She took the round, but hesitated before going to the common room. What if he was still there?

‘Pagal ho gayi hai kya Nidhi? Tu Dr. Ashutosh se dar kyon rahi hai?’ she chided herself.

But the counter-argument came to her mind too, ‘Jaise unhone baat ki… usse to yahi lagta hai ki Dr. Mallika ki baat sach. To phir…’

‘To phir kya?’

‘To phir… ye sahi nahin hai na. Main unke liye sahi nahin hoon.’

‘Kyon nahin? Agar itne saalon baad unhein tere saath khushi milti hai to galat kya hai. Aur phir tu bhi to…’

‘Main kya sochti hoon isse farq nahin padta. Main unke liye bahut immature hoon. Aab aaj bhi maine kaise insensitively unse sawaal kar diye. No. No. It won’t do…’

‘To tu unhein wapas andheron mein dhakel degi?’

‘Nahin!’

‘Phir?’

‘Phir pata nahin. Main kuchh karoongi…’

What would she do? She kept thinking as she walked back to the common room.

“Anji….” Nidhi went to her place after having breakfast in the morning.

“Dr. Nidhi Verma. Aapko meri yaad kaise aa gayi aaj? Aur bahut galat time par aayi hai. Mujhe kaam par jaana hai.”

“Kya yaar! Kuchh advice chahiye thi tujhse.”

“Haan. Bol. Main to waise bhi hamesha se teri agony aunt rahi hoon.”

“Pata hai. And very effective too. Lekin is baar meri nahin, kissi aur ki problem tere paas le kar aayi hoon,” Nidhi lied successfully.

“Pagal hai kya? Kissi aur ki problem kyon apne sar le li…”

“Are yaar. Maine kaafi boast kar diya na uske saamne ki meri best friend in sab maamlon mein kitni sahi hai. Ab to tujhe hamari dosti ki khatir, meri help karni hi padegi. Please Anji…”

“Theek hai. Theek hai… Bol fatafat.”

“Yaar. Mere saath ek intern hai. Sonali. Uska ek achchha dost hai. Aur ye dost usse pyaar karta hai. Unki koi baat nahin hui hai kabhi, lekin ye obvious hai. Sonali uski bahut care karti hai, shayad pyaar bhi karti hai, lekin uski kuchh constraints hai, family ko lekar. So, woh kabhi uske saath relationship mein nahin ja sakti. To use apne friend ke liye kya karna chahiye, taki Sonali ke chale jaane se, use taqleef na pahunche…”

“Ye kaisa sawaal hai yaar Nidhi? Iska koi solution hota to duniya mei itni sob love stories kyon hoti? Uska dil to tootna hi hai. Ya phir Sonali ko apni jo bhi family constraints hain, unse ladna padega.”

“Woh possible nahin hai Anji. Kuchh to soch…”

“Pata nahin Nidhi. May be she can try to hook him up with some other girl…”

“Kya?”

“Ab mujhe aur nahin pata. Mujhe jaana hai. Bye…”

The idea had sounded outrageous at first and Anji herself had not appeared convinced about it. But when Nidhi thought about it in the context of her problem, it felt like the perfect thing to do.

She had a new mission in her life now. To get Ashutosh to fall in love. With someone other than herself. With someone his equal. But how?

“Dr. Rangnath. You should be the best person to asnwer this?”

“Kya?”

“Meri ek friend news reporter hai aur apni ek story ke liye woh survey kar rahi hai.”

“Okay?”

“To uske liye use logon ki opinion chahiye ki jo love marriages hoti hain, to woh log typically apne life partners se pahli baar kaise mile hote hain? Kahan par?”

“Umm… college?”

“Uske baad?”

“Workplace?”

“Aur?”

“Pubs. Discos….”

“Un sabse kahan kaam banega,” Nidhi murmured.

“Ji?”

“Kuchh nahin. Aur bataiye. Suppose jo log parties wagerah attend nahin karte, pubs, discos nahin jaate… Unki bhi to love life ho sakti hai na?”

Rangnath eyed her curiously, “Ye aapki reporter friend ka question hai?”

“Haan. Aur kya? Bechari ki deadline hai na. To main help kar rahi hoon. Kuchh aisi jagahon ke naam ho jo kissi ne pahle na soche hon, to uska article ekdum chamak jayega. Hai na?”

“I think log functions aur professional get-togethers par bhi milte hain. Jaise ki conventions, seminars, society get-togethers. Aur haan… Main ye kaise bhool gaya? Shaadiyon mein.”

“Shaadiyon mein?”

“Haan. India mein jo log kahin aur nahin jaate, parties, pubs etc. woh bhi shaadiyon mein to jaate hi hain. Woh to ekdum gold mine hai. Sab ladkiyan kitna saj-dhaj ke aati hain… Aisa lagta hai…”

“All right Dr. Rangnath. I don’t think ki shaadiyon aur ladkiyon ko aapke nazaron se dekhna mere liya khaas achchha hai. Main chalti hoon. Bye.”

“Dr. Ashutosh. Aap Priyanka ki wedding mein kya pahanne waale hain?” Nidhi asked during one of her tea-trips to Ashutosh’ office.

“Kya?” Ashutosh was completely taken aback by her question and then it looked like he was struggling to suppress a chuckle, “Aap mujhse thoda galat sawaal poochh rahi hain. Ya aap sawaal galat insaan se poochh rahi hain. Shaadi mein kya pahanna hai, nahin pahanna hai, ye sawaal ya to auraton ke liye important hota hai, ya youngsters ke liye. I am a little old for this. And most likely, main shaadi mein ja hi nahin raha hoon.”

“Are! Kyon nahin ja rahe hain?”

“Well… agar saare log shaadi mein chale gaye to yahan par kaam kaun sambhaalega?”

“Main maanti hoon Dr. Ashutosh ki aap bahut achchhe, competent aur experienced doctor hain. Lekin aapko nahin lagta ki it is a bit presumptuous on your part to think ki aap poora department bina kissi aur doctor ya staff ki madad ke bina hi chala lenge.”

Ashutosh laughed, “Maine ye to nahin kaha…”

“Exactly. Sab log ek saath hospital chhod kar nahin jayenge. Dr. Rangnath ne iska intezaam kar liya hai. Ek group shaadi ke liye, aur ek group agle din reception ke liye ja raha hai.”

“Okay…”

“Okay? Okay kya? Iska matlab ye hai ki aap ja bhi sakte hain, aur jayenge bhi.”

“Main aise celebrations, parties enjoy nahin karta Dr. Nidhi.”

“Enjoy nahin karte the. Lekin aapne khud hi accept kiya tha na ki ab aap apne aaj mein khush rahna seekh gaye hain? To ab aap enjoy karenge.”

“Dr. Nidhi…”

“Nahin. Main nahin sunne waali,” Nidhi was aware of her powers over him and was willing to exploit it fully, “Aap zaroor aayenge. Ab bas ye bataiye ki aap pahanne kya waale hain?”

“Ab agar mujhe aana hi hoga to pahan loonga kuchh bhi. Ismein itna fret karne waali kya baat hai?”

“Phir to aap apna ye hardstone trademark suit pahan lenge?”

“Ismein koi burai hai?”

“Nahin. Burai nahin hai. Lekin mujhe lagta hai ki in kapdon mein aate hi aap bilkul hospital waale mood mein aa jaate hain. Ab shaadi mein aisa kiya to kaam kaise banega….”

“Kya kaam banwana hai aapko mujhse?”

“Kuchh nahin. Kaam kya banwana hoga… Bas aapko shopping karwani padegi. Ab Chowk aur Ameenabaad mein ghoom-ghoom kar shopping karne ka to time aapke paas hoga nahin. Main aapko aaj shaam aath baje Sahara Mall mein milungi.”

“Kya?” Ashutosh was aghast. What was she doing? “Dr. Nidhi… Look… Main…”

“Agar aap nahin aaye to main apni pasand se size ka andaaza laga kar kuchh khareed doongi. Phir fit na aaye ya achchha na lage to mujhe mat kuchh kahiyega. Main chalti hoon. Bye.”

She dashed out of his office without giving him any chance to protest. For several seconds after she left, Ashutosh had a lost look on his face. As if he didn’t know what to do about what just happened. Then he shook his head, sighed and tried to go back to his work.

Nidhi was anxiously pacing up and down in front of the shop in the mall. It was 8.15 already and Ashutosh hadn’t come. ‘8.30 closing time hai. 8.45 se zyada to nahin khula rakhenge ye log,’ she murmured angrily, ‘Saari mehnat bekaar hone waali hai Nidhi.’

She almost jumped when her mobile rang, “Yes Sir… 4th floor par… aap please lift le lijiye parking lot se. Escalators se aane mein zyada time lagega…. Ji…”

“So, Dr. Nidhi. Kya karna hai?” Ashutosh asked when he spotted her.

“Pahle to shop ko band hone se rokna hai. Jaldi chaliye,” she dashed inside and Ashutosh had to follow her hurriedly. She located a sales man and asked him, “Bhaiya. Maine abhi select kar ke aapke paas rakhwaye the na…”

“Ji Madam. Aaiye…”

He took them to the men’s ethnic section of the shop and pointed to a pile on a counter.

“Haan. Yahi hai,” Nidhi said excitedly and started showing stuff to Ashutosh.

“Sherwani?” he asked looking incredulous.

“Haan. Kyon? Koi problem hai?”

“These are too showy, too bright Dr. Nidhi. Main ye sab nahin pahanta hoon. Chaliye yahan se…”

“Nahin pahante the. Aur inmein sab bright aur showy nahin hain. Ye dekhiye…” she picked up a sherwani in light cream color with a thin strip of zari work around the neck and thread work on the rest of the outfit.

Ashutosh could not retort, but he made a face as if he was annoyed. Nidhi was not to be fazed by that though, “Try kijiye.”

Ashutosh went to the changing room. But when he came out he was back into his old clothes. Nidhi was disappointed to not see him in the sherwani. Since he did not show it to her while wearing, she expected him to reject it. But part of her disappointment went away when she heard him say, “Size theek hai.”

“Great. Chaliye phir isse pahle ki ye log billing counter band kar dein, billing karwa lete hain.”

“Aapne zidd ki, to maine ye khareed liya hai Dr. Nidhi,” Ashutosh said after they came out of the shop, “Lekin iska matlab ye nahin hai ki main shaadi mein aane waal hoon ya ye pahanne waala hoon.”

“Dekhenge. Abhi to problem ye hai ki mere paas meri car nahin hai aur aapko mujhe drop karna hoga. Raaste mein aapki sherwani ke saath jaane ke liye mojdi bhi khareedni hai. Ek shop hai….”

“Drop to main aapko kar doonga. Lekin aap apni car le kar kyon nahin aayi, jab aap raat mein bahar nikli thi? Agar main nahin aata to?” Ashutosh questioned her.

“To is bechari, abla naari ko Lucknow ke auto waale bahut lootate. Dogune, chaugune paise maangte.” Nidhi said dramatically and it made Ashutosh laugh.

“Mazaak apni jagah hai. Lekin Lucknow itna safe shahar nahin hai. Raat mein akele aapko bina apne vehicle ke nahin nikalna chahiye.”

“Samajh gayi. Ab chalein? Warna woh jooton waali shop bhi band ho jayegi.”

Ashutosh sighed. She was single mindedly focussed on his wedding party attire for the evening. Nothing else was going to affect her. “Chaliye,” he said and they walked towards his car.

But Nidhi’s antics for the day were not done.

“Beauty or brains?” she said suddenly while they were driving.

“Brains,” Ashutosh replied reflexively and then realized that he had no clue about where that came from, “Ab ye kya ho raha hai?”

“Kuchh nahin. Boriyat mitane ke liye chhota sa game.”

“To aap mere saath bore ho rahi hain?”

“Meri chhodiye. Aap bataiye ki aapko kaise logon ki company pasand hai?”

“Kyon?”

“Ab aapko koi security threat mahsoos hota hai kya apne baare mein kuchh bhi batane mein? Bas aise hi poochh rahi hoon, baatein karne ke liye…”

“Okay Baba. Mujhe kaise logon ki company pasand hai? Kabhi socha nahin, lekin I think I like intelligent people. Woh aapne suna hai – Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. To main woh people-discussion waalo logon se door rahna pasand karta hoon. Oopar ke dono theek hain.”

Nidhi giggled at this and Ashutosh also smiled.

“Aap vegetarian hain ya non-vegetarian?”

“I don’t mind non-veg. India ke bahar rahne ke baad avoid karna mushkil hai. Lekin main zyada khata nahin hoon.”

“Aur aapka favourite holiday destination?”

“Mujhe aisa lag raha hi ki main kissi matrimonial consultancy ke office mein baitha hoon?”

Nidhi laughed nervously, “Aap bhi na… Achchha mazaak kar lete hain.”

But she decided to step back after this. She did not want him to suspect what she was trying to do.

“Woh shop… wahan runka hai,” she cried as she spotted the shoe shop for buying mojdis.

Ashutosh reluctantly stopped, bought the mojdi she selected and then drove to her home.

“Good night Dr. Ashutosh. Kal shaadi par milte hain.”

“Aap hospital nahin aa rahi hain?”

“Meri kal duty nahin hai.”

Ashutosh nodded and drove away as Nidhi looked on. She felt happy and sad at the same time.

“Oh my God! I am going to faint,” Sonali pretended to sway as if she was feeling dizzy.

“Oye. Drama Queen. Kya hua?” Nidhi asked.

“Dr. Ashutosh ko dekh Nidhi. Pahli baat to woh shaadi mein aaye. Aur us par se ye sherwaani. God! Koi itna handsome kaise lag sakta hai yaar. Inhein doctor kisne bana diya. Model ya actor hona chahiye tha.”

Nidhi looked in the direction Sonali pointed too and realized that she agreed to Sonali’s sentiments. She did not say anything though and controlled her urge to go to him at once. Now that he was at the wedding, Nidhi was at a loss. What to do? Sure he will turn all female heads towards him, but what after that?

“Kya taaka-jhaanki chal rahi hai kudiyon?” It was Priyanka’s happy-go-lucky bua ji.

“Aap bhi aa jaiye Bua ji. Hamare boss ko dekhiye aur nayan-sukh ka laabh uthaiye,” said one of the other colleagues of Nidhi and Priyanka.

“Kaun se boss? Dr. Ashutosh? Hum bhi dekhin kaun hain woh. Priyanka to badi pareshaan rahti hain unse… Are woh cream sherwani mein kaun hai?”

“Wahi to hain Dr. Ashutosh?”

“Kya baat kar rahi ho?”

“Bilkul sahi baat kar rahi hoon.”

“Yaar. Itna sona dikhne waala insaan itna khadoos kaise ho sakta hai?”

Nidhi was hearing the conversation of the women and feeling proud about it. She couldn’t explain why though. If people were gushing about Dr. Ashutosh why did she need to feel proud?

Anyway! She shruged and tried to get back to the task she had set for herself. But how? She turned her attention to the conversation again.

“Aur tum log kah rahe ho ki is insaan ki shaadi nahin hui?” Bua’s curiosity was insatiable.

“Nahin hui Bua ji.”

“To karwa dete hain.”

“Kaise Bua Ji?” Nidhi was suddenly interested.

“Dr. Ashutosh ki shaadi mein tujhe itna interest kyon hai?” Sonali teased Nidhi.

“Main bata rahi hoon, Dr. Ashutosh ki shaadi ho jaye, unke subordinates ke liye isse zyada achchhi khabar kuchh ho hi nahin sakti. Shayad thode soft ho jayen aur haan – hospital mein thoda time bhi kam bitayenge,” Nidhi was ready with an alibi.

“Idea to dhansu hai. Waise Dr. Rangnath kah rahe the ki in dinon woh already thode softened ho gaye hain. Lekin thode aur ho jayen to bura nahin hoga.”

“Exactly. Bataiye Bua ji. Dr. Ashutosh ki shaadi kaise karwai jaye? Dhyaan rakhiyega, unhein impress karna thoda mushkil hai.”

“Achchha. Kaisi ladki sahi rahegi unke liye?”

“Unke liye… Umm… Intelligent aur smart honi chahiye. Khoobsoorat ho to kissi ko koi objection to nahin hi hoga. Aur haan – mature honi chahiye. Mere jaisi ladkiyan nahin chalengi, uchhal-kood machane waali. Wagerah… wagerah… Ab mere paas isse zyada unki koi matrimonial profile nahin hai.”

“Are to hain na.”

“Kaun?”

“Meri nanad hai. Suhani. Chartered Accountant hai. Ekdum corporate woman. Tip-top. Priyanka se badi banti thi uski bachpan se hi, halanki badi hai usse kaafee. Dono hi padhne-likhne waali ladkiyan thi na. Abhi aayegi thodee der mein. Kah rahi thi ki kuchh zaroori deadline aa gayi hai office mein, isliye der ho jayegi.”

‘Chartered Accountant? Phir to intelligence ki koi kami nahin hogi,’ Nidhi thought to herself, ‘Baaki to dono milenge, tab hi pata chalega.’

“To Bua ji,” Nidhi addressed her, “Chaliye. Main aapko Dr. Ashutosh se milwati hoon.”

Ashutosh was talking to a group of people from the hospital, when Nidhi approached him.

“Good evening Dr. Ashutosh.”

“Dr. Nidhi. Good evening,” Ashutosh beamed on seeing her, “Main soch hi raha tha…”

“Dr. Ashutosh,” Nidhi interrupted him, as she didn’t want him to reveal anything about their little shopping trip for the sherwani he was wearing, “Mujhe aapko inse milwana tha. Ye Priyanki ki Bua hai…. Oops! Bua ji. Mujhe aapka naam to maaloon hi nahin hai.”

“Are koi problem nahin hai. Mujhe apna naam maaloon hai. Main Namrata. Namrata Singhania.”

“Namaste Mrs. Singhania. Main…”

“Dr. Ashutosh Mathur. Sabhi jaante hain.”

Ashutosh laughed slightly, “Nahin. Main koi celebrity nahin hoon.”

“Aap baithiye na,” Namrata pointed towards the chairs lying by and sat on one of them herself. Ashutosh and Nidhi followed the suit.

“Aap enjoy to kar rahe hain na?” she asked after they had sat down.

“Ji, main to aane waala nahin tha, lekin…”

“Lekin,” Nidhi interrupted hurriedly, “aa kar realize hua ki nahin aate to kitna fun miss ho jaata. Hai na Dr. Ashutosh?”

Ashutosh looked at her and then agreed to her, even though feeling confused. What was Nidhi up to?

“Aap log baatein kijiye. Main aapke liye cold-drinks le kar aati hoon,” Nidhi said, got up and left, despite Ashutosh’ insistence that he did not want cold-drinks.

“To Dr. Ashutosh. Aap Kotnis General Hospital mein kitne dinon se kaam kar rahe hain?”

“Dinon se nahin Mrs. Singhania, saalon se. Aath saalon se.”

“He he. Of course. To aapne kabhi Lucknow se bahar jaane ki nahin sochi?”

“Nahin. Main yahin comfortable hoon.”

“Family hogi aapki yahan.”

Ashutosh’ face darkened, “Ji nahin. Meri koi family nahin hai. Na yahan, na kahin aur.”

“Oh! Aisa kyon…. Are… Suhani aa gayi. Rukiye main aapse milwati hoon…”

Ashutosh looked at her puzzled, as she shouted and waved her hands to draw Suhani’s attention to herself. Another introduction? What was going on? Ashutosh wonderd while Suhani approached them.

“Hi Bhabhi,” Suhani said pleasantly, “Aaj to mujhe Bhai ko bolna padega ki apne aankh-kaan khule rakhein. Kahin aap haath se na nikal jayen.” She started with the usual sis-in-law banter.

“Meri umar chali gayi haath se nikalne ki Suhani. Achchha inse mil. Dr. Ashutosh Mathur. Priyanka ke boss hain.”

“Hello Dr. Ashutosh,” Suhani extended her hands, “Nice to meet you.”

“Hello. Nice to meet you too.”

Nidhi bustled in with the cold-drinks by then, “Bua ji… Ye aapki nanad hain?”

“Haan. Suhani. Ye Dr. Nidhi Verma hain. Priyanka ke colleague.”

Suhani and Nidhi exchanged pleasantaries and Nidhi felt satisfied on looking at the tall smart woman, she had just been introduced as Suhani.

“Are… Main to bhool hi gayi. Bua Ji,” Nidhi exclaimed after her introduction with Suhani, “Aapko auntie bula rahi hain. Kuchh kaam hai. Suhani ji. Aap aur Dr. Ashutosh baatein kijiye. Ye lijiye cold-drinks. Hum abhi wapas aate hain.” She handed one glass cold-drink each to Ashutosh and Suhani and dragged Namrata away from there.

Ashutosh was completely puzzled at what was happening, while Suhani started laughing.

“Aap hans kyon rahi hain?” he had to ask.

“Let me guess. Aapki shaadi nahin hui hai,” Suhani said, still laughing.

“Well. Aapka guess sahi hai. Lekin mujhe nahin lagta ki usmein kuchh bhi laughable hai,” Ashutosh said patiently.

“Nahin nahin… Of course, usmein koi problem nahin hai. Problem ye hain – meri ye Bhabhi. Aapki shaadi nahin hui hai, isliye woh aap par attack kar baithi.”

“Aapki Bhabhi?” Ashutosh wondered if Suhani was so casually hinting at something scandulous about her sister-in-law.

“Are. Apne liye nahin bhai. Mere liye. Inhein samajh mein nahin aata ki logon ko shaadi nahin bhi karni ho sakti hai. Inka wash chale to baalig hote hi sabki shaadi karwa dein. I think inhone aapki achchhi khaasi grilling ki hogi. Main uske liye maafi maangti hoon.”

Ashutosh smiled finally, “Achchha. To ye baat hai. Well – main samajh sakta hoon aapki situation. Thankfully mere aas paas family waale nahin hai mujhe grill karne ke liye. Lekin phir bhi…”

“I know. Chaliye. To isi baat par, cheers to not marrying…” Their cold-drink glasses touched each other and they took a sip.

“Waise. Aapki Bhabhi apna target fix kaise karti hain? Unhein kaise pata chala ki main…”

“Network aur social skills. Aapke to itne colleagues yahan hain. Unmein se hi kissi se pata lagwaya hoga. Aapko introduce kisne karwaya.”

“Woh to Dr. Nidhi… Dr. Nidhi?” His tone suddenly changed from casual to that of surprise, “Nahin. I don’t think Dr. Nidhi…”

“Aap meri Bhabhi ke influence ko underestimate mat kijiye.”

Ashutosh smiled unsurely and then they switched to different topics of their professional lives, Lucknow roads and politics etc.

Nidhi observed them from a distance and saw Ashutosh engaged in a chat with Suhani happily. She felt strange and walked away.

Suahni took leave from Ashutosh after a while to meet Priyanka and Ashutosh set out to find Nidhi.

It took him a while to find her. He saw her walking out of the wedding venue and decided to follow her. She walked towards the road and suddenly exclaimed, “Oh God! Car kahan gayi?”

“Kya hua Dr. Nidhi,” he approached her hastily.

“Sir aap? Pata nahin… maine car yahin khadi ki thi…”

“Woh traffic waale tow kar ke le gaye hain,” a shopkeeper shouted from across the narrow road.

“Ye no parking zone hai? Kahin to sign nahin bana hai?”

“No parking zone sign se nahin, police waalon ki marzi se bante hain Madam,” the shopkeeper replied.

“Ab kya karoon?” Nidhi looked at her watch, “Itni der ho gayi hai. Abhi kahan se…”

“Main aapko drop kar deta hoon,” Ashutosh said, “Aap subah police station ja kar car le aaiyega.”

“Lekin mujhe abhi hi jaana hai. Main taxi le leti hoon.”

“Haan to main aapko abhi hi le jaunga.”

“Nahin. Aap kyon party chhod kar chalenge.”

“Mujhe party mein aane par aapne majboor kiya tha Dr. Nidhi. Agar aap chhod kar ja sakti hain, to main to ja hi sakta hoon.”

“Lekin…” Nidhi started to say, but stopped and sighed. She could really not think of an argument.

“Chaliye,” he directed her towards his car.

“To mujhe zabardasti yahan bula kar, mujhe andar chhod kar, aap itni jaldi party chhod kar kyon bhaag rahi thi?”

“Aise hi. Main subah se thi na Priyanka ke saath. Thak gayi thi. Aur mujhe laga ki aap party enjoy kar rahe honge. Isliye aapko kuchh nahin kaha.”

“Aisa kyon laga aapko?”

“Kya?”

“Ki main party enjoy kar raha hoon.”

“Galat laga kya?”

Ashutosh turned his head towards the passenger’s seat, looked at her intently and sighed. She could feel his gaze on her, but did not look back at him.

“Achchha lagta hai na shaadiyon mein,” Nidhi spoke after a while, “Naye naye logon se milne ka mauka milta hai.”

“Kin-kin naye logon se mili aap?”

“Suahni ji, for example. Bahut intelligent aur smart hain. Aur ekdum down to earth bhi. No airs about her. Nahin?”

“I think so…”

“Mera wash chale to main to unse dosti karna chahungi.”

“Aapka kissi se dosti karne ka man ho, to aap kar hi lengi. Aapki dosti kaun thukrayega?”

“Aur aap?”

“Main kya? Aapki dosti to maine bhi nahin thukrai.”

“Meri nahin. Suhani ji ki.”

“Look Nidhi,” Ashutosh decided to come to the point, “Mujhe nahin pata ki tum kya karne ki koshish kar rahi ho. Lekin abhi naye dost banane ko lekar mere andar itna enthusiasm to hai nahin ki I go out of my way to do it.”

“Main kuchh karne ki koshish nahin kar rahi hoon,” Nidhi mumbled like a scared kid. It made Ashutosh smile.

“Of course not. Kahir chhodiye. Doosron ke baatein kar ke bore nahin hote hain. Aap bataiye ki aap party se kyon chali aayi? Aapko to bahut achchha lagta hai ye sab.”

“Bola to – thak gayi thi.”

“Thaki hui lag to nahin rahi hain.”

“Ab iska kya jawaab hai.”

“Kahin thakaan mental to nahin thi?” Ashutosh asked meaningfully.

“Pata nahin,” Nidhi replied and then they both fell silent. They only spoke to wish each other good night, when the car pulled up in front of her home.

“Dr. Nidhi,” Ranganth called her.

“Yes, Dr. Rangnath?”

“Woh Dr. Amraan ke saath hamein WHO ke project ke liye kuchh logon ko aas paas ke gaon mein bhejna hai na, to usmein aapko bhi jaana hai.”

“Theek hai. Kal subah jaana hai na?”

“Haan. Ye raha program. Teen-teen logon ke group mein jaana hai, alag-alag areas cover karne ke liye.”

“Achchha. Theek hai. Main time par aa jaungi.”

Nidhi took the paper from him and looked at her group. The other two names in the group made her smile. Dr. Ashutosh Mathur and Dr. Varsha Rao. Dr. Varsha Rao was in the gynacology department and often consulted Pediatrics on the issues with newborn babies. She shared a good rapport with Dr. Ashutosh and…

Yes! All she had to do was to make sure that she stayed away from them and let them spend more and more time together. Who knows! She might be the one. She jumped with joy at her little plan.

“Sir. Main bachchon ka checkup kar loon. Aap aur Dr. Varsha adults ka kar sakte hain.”

“Okay Dr. Nidhi,” Ashutosh smiled, “Dr. Varsha. Inko jahan bachche dikhte hain, ye pagal ho jati hain. Bachchon se inhein door rakhna namumkin hai. Aaiye – bade bachchon se hum hi nibatte hain.”

Varsha also smiled, “Sure Dr. Ashutosh. Chaliye.”

Varsha went to check the women, while Ashutosh was soon done with the men.

“Aankhein band, aankhein band…. aur ye machchar ki chutki…. Sui, sui kahan hai? Aankhein kholo…. Ho gaya na… Kuchh pata bhi chala…. Phir? Bekaar mein dar rahe the. Chalo – ab iske baad kaun aayega? Aa jao, aa jao. Machchhar ki chutki se bhi bhala koi darta hai kya… Yes. Aap aa jao… Naam kya hai aapka? Savita… Bahut pyara naam hai…”

She was taken aback when she found Ashutosh watching her fondly, “Sir Aap? Maine dekha hi nahin. Kab se khade hain aap yahan?”

“Thodi der ho gayi. Aap bilkul mashgool thi.” He did not tell her that he had silently indicated the kids who saw him to not let Nidhi know.

“Sorry…”

“Are nahin. Sorry ki kya baat hai. Sabka check up ho gaya?”

“Bas chaar-paanch bachche bache hain.”

“Chaliye. Main bhi aapki madad kar deta hoon. Jaldi nibat jayenge.”

“Aur Dr. Varsha?”

“Unka bhi check up ka kaam khatam ho gaya hai. Lekin woh auraton ke saath baithi hain thodee der, unki aur health related problems dekh rahi hain aur thoda educate kar rahi hain.”

“That’s so nice.”

“Yep.”

Nidhi was in a fix. She had wanted to keep Varsha and Ashutosh together. But he was there with her now. Even if she got away from him with the alibi of helping Varsha, it wouldn’t help her ultimate goal.

Varsha was going to drive on their way back. Ashutosh was taking the back seat, expecting Nidhi to sit in the front. But she stopped him.

“Sir. If you don’t mind, aap aage baith jayenge.”

“Kyon? Kya hua?”

“Mujhe shayad neend aa jayegi, main thak gayi hoon. To aage baith kar sona theek nahin rahega… Isliye…”

“Okay,” Ashutosh said, but eyed her suspiciously. She averted her eyes and got into the car.

Nidhi didn’t sleep at all in the car, but she kept her eyes closed whenever she thought Ashutosh or Varsha might be looking at her.

“Dr. Nidhi? Should drop you home directly?” Varsha asked her when they were about to enter back in the city.

“Yes Ma’m.”

“Aapki car nahin hai hospital mein?” Ashutosh asked.

“No Sir. Subah driver ke saath aayi thi. Woh wapas le gaya. Baba ko kaam tha.”

“Okay. To mujhe hospital mein aapse thoda kaam hai. If you don’t mind hum hospital hi chalte hain aur phir main aapko drop kar doonga.”

“Okay Sir,” she said weakly, thought quite surprised at his request. What did he have to discuss with her?

She walked silently with him to his office. It was past normal working hours and only the night duty staff was there in the hospital. The usual hustle-bustle was missing. Nidhi wondered why she was so keenly aware of the emptiness of the hospital. She has done night duties so many times. When she entered his room, she realized what was different. She was alone with him the office and there weren’t many people around. It made it more private than usual. And she was scared that she will be forced to face and own certain things, her feelings, which she wasn’t ready to do, which she didn’t think she should do.

“Yes Sir?”

“What’s going on Dr. Nidhi?”

“Ji?”

“Kuchh to khuraafaat aapke man mein chal rahi hai…”

“Nahin. Nahin Sir. Aisa kyon laga aapko?”

“Kyonki aaj aap bilkul bhi so nahin rahi thi. Lekin sone ka bahana zaroor kar rahi thi.”

“Main so rahi thi…”

“Nahin. Aap sirf apni aankhein band kar rahi thi jab aapko lag raha tha ki main aapko dekh raha hoon. Ab ye bataiye ki aap aisa kyon kar rahi thi?”

Nidhi gulped and did not say anything.

“Aur meri baat hui thi Ms. Suhani Sighania se bhi, baad mein…”

Nidhi did not say anything, just looked at him curiously.

“Unhone mujhe bataya ki unki Bhabhi se aapki kya baatein hui thi.”

Nidhi stood rooted to her place and did not say anything again.

“Dr. Nidhi. Aapko ye bachkaani koshishein band karni hongi. Aap samajh rahi hain meri baat? This is not how things work.”

Tears clouded her eyes and she could not say anything. She nodded and rushed out of his office. Ashutosh realized that she had started crying. He ran after her, but was interrupted by a nurse who was giving him some message from the administration. By the time he came out, he could not see Nidhi anywhere. He enquired at the reception and they said that she called for a taxi and went home.

He felt very bad. He could have handled it better, instead of hurting her like that. He thought of calling her up and picked up his mobile several times during the evening to do that. But hesitation crept in and he did not call her.

Nidhi spent the night in a bad mood. When asked by Baba and Dadi Bua, she told them that she was tired after the day’s expedition and kept to her room most of the time. She did not come out for dinner and asked it to be sent to her room.

‘Tujhe unse door hi rahna hoga Nidhi,’ she told herself, ‘Tu kuchh bhi kare, unke liye sahi nahin hota. Is baar bhi unhein sab kuchh bachkaana lag raha tha. Bachkaana hi hai shayad. Tujhe aisa kyon laga ki tu unki life badal sakti hai. Tu pagal hai Nidhi. Aur bilkul immature. Leave him alone.’

Though saddened by the conclusion, she found some peace after arrivng at it and drifted off to sleep.

Ashutosh checked the duty chart the next day and went to Rangnath’s office.

“Dr. Rangnath. Dr. Nidhi Verma ki aaj duty nahin hai kissi bhi shift mein?”

“No Sir. Jo doctors kal field mein gaye the, unka aaj off day hai. Aapko bhi chhutti le leni chahiye thi…”

“No. I am fine. Thanks.”

“Koi khaas kaam tha Sir? To main unhein phone karwata hoon…”

“Nahin. Uski koi zaroorat nahin hai. Main baat kar loonga. Thank you Dr. Rangnath,” Ashutosh walked out of his office. Rangnath smirked behind him and whistled to the tune of the song ‘tujhe na dekhoon to chain mujhe aata nahin hai’.

Nidhi was listlessly flipping through TV channels, when her mobile rang.

“Hello Sir.”

“Dr. Nidhi. Mujhe aapse kuchh baat karni thi… actually milna tha… Agar aap bahut thaki hui nahin hai to…”

“No Sir. Main bilkul thaki hui nahin hoon. Main… Main hospital aa jaun?”

“Nahin. Hospital nahin.”

“Ji?”

“I mean, main bhi hospital mein nahin hoon. Kahin aur mil sakte hain?”

“Ji. Jaisa aap kahein.”

Ashutosh was hoping that she would propose a place, but she didn’t.

“Main aapko aapke ghar se pick kar loon?”

Nidhi was quite surprised and confused, but she agreed, “Theek hai, Sir. Kab?”

“Bees minute mein.”

“Okay Sir.”

Nidhi nervously got inside his car, as he pulled up in front of her home. Then they drove away immediately. They sat in silence for a while.

“Kal aap bura maan kar chali aayi,” he said as he stopped the car on the side of a deserted road, “Hamari baat poori nahin ho payi.”

Nidhi looked down and did not say anything.

“Main ye jaanna chahta hoon ki aap ye sab kyon kar rahi thi?”

“Meri bewkoofi thi, Sir. I am sorry.”

“Nahin. Ye mere sawaal ka jawaab nahin hai. Bewkoofi karna aapka aim to nahin tha Dr. Nidhi. Jitna jaanta hoon aapko, aapke man mein kuchh achchha hi raha hoga. Kya tha wo?”

Nidhi remained silent.

“Main aapse kuchh poochh raha hoon Dr. Nidhi?”

“Kya maine khud ko already sufficient bewkoof nahin banaya hai, jo ab aap mujhse aur kuchh bulwana chahte hain?” Nidhi felt irritated at being cornered.

“Nahin,” Ashutosh said in an extremely soft voice, “Aapne khud ko bilkul bewkoof nahin banaya hai. At least meri nazaron mein to nahin, if that matters. Main aapko bura mahsoos karwane ke liye kuchh nahin poochh raha hoon. Main isliye poochh raha hoon… kyonki mere paas aur koi tareeka nahin hai ye pata karne ka ki aapke man mein kya chal raha hai. Aur mere liye ye janna zaroori hai.”

“Kyon?”

“Kyonki jo bhi aapke man mein hai, shayad kuchh bahut khoobsoorat hai. Aur main use khona nahin chahta.”

“Khoobsoorti ke saath immaturity aur bachpana bhi hai mere man mein. Unka kya karenge aap?”

“Unhein bhi enjoy karoonga. Halanki mujhe lagta nahin ki unki quantity zyada hai aapke dimmag mein,” Ashutosh smiled.

“Jab aap khoobsoorti ko, khushiyon ko apnaane ko taiyaar hain, to why not go for the best? Go for someone who can match upto you.”

“Yahi karne ki koshish kar rahi thi aap?”

Nidhi nodded.

“Dr. Nidhi. Insaan ko perfection ki nahin, khushiyon ki zaroorat hoti hai. Main bhi to perfect nahin hoon. Aap mere liye kuchh perfect kyon dhoondh rahi hain?”

Their eyes met once after this, but Nidhi averted hers again.

“Aur ek baat jaan lo Nidhi,” he spoke again in a low, heavy, intimate voice, “Feelings transferrable nahin hoti hain. Agar mujhe gulaab ke phool mein khoobsoorti nazar aane lagi hai, to iska ye matlab nahin hai ki gende mein bhi nazar aayegi. Ye jaante hue bhi ki gulaab mein kaante hote hain. Sawaal sirf itna hai ki kya woh gulaab mere garden mein khil sakega, ya wahan ki hawa use raas nahin aayegi aur woh murjha jayega. Agar nahin khil sakega, to woh jahan khil sakta hai use wahi rahna chahiye. Lekin main apne garden mein gende ke phool nahin laga sakta. Door se gulaab ko dekh kar khush rah sakta hoon.”

Ashutosh stopped for a moment and saw her gulping hard.

“Aap meri baat samajh rahi hain?” He asked.

Nidhi nodded.

“Chaliye. Phir main aapko ghar chhod deta hoon. Thakaan to ho hi gayi hogi kal din bhar ghoom kar,” he restarted the car and took a U-turn.

“Nidhi,” he called her after she got out of the car, “Tum pareshaan to nahin ho gayi meri baaton se?”

She nodded in negative with a slight smile.

“Pareshaan hona bhi mat,” he also smiled and drove away.

Nidhi walked to her room as if in a dream. The entire conversation played in her mind. And then she smiled, smiled broadly as she realized the implication. He wanted her. He wanted only her. Her shortcomings did not matter!

And she decided to throw the caution out of the window.

Ashutosh went back to the hospital after dropping Nidhi and reached home after 10 at night. He was surprised to find a flower pot lying on the table in the hall.

“Kaka. Ye paudha…”

“Ek ladki de gayi thi shaam mein… Maine poochha to bola ki Dr. Ashutosh ke liye hai aur unhein pata hoga. Naam tak nahin bataya. Kaun thi tumhein kuchh pata hai kya?”

Surprised Ashutosh went closer to the table and looked that plant. It was a rose plant. It took him a moment to realize it’s significance and then he started laughing. Kaka was surprised to see him laugh.

“Kya hua Ashutosh?”

“Kuchh nahin Kaka. Sach much pagal hai ye ladki.”

“Hai kaun?”

“Nidhi. Dr. Nidhi Verma. Is paudhe ki dekh-bhaal achchhe se honi chahiye Kaka. Murjhaye nahin.”

“Theek hai. Woh to ho jayega. Khana laga doon?”

“Haan Kaka.”

After Ashutosh retired to his room post-dinner, he had no control over his happiness. He was smiling broadly and almost felt like jumping with joy. He controlled his urge to call Nidhi up given that it was so late at night. And was the night long for him!!

Ashutosh reached hospital even earlier than usual the next day. He checked his watch after parking the car. It was still quarter to eight. Nidhi won’t be in before nine. Why had he come running this early? But he couldn’t hold himself back at home.

He didn’t know that Nidhi was already there and was watching him walk to his office through the corridor. She was excited and nervous. She was dying to meet him and yet was not sure how to face him. What will she tell him? What will they talk about? How would he behave now that he knew…

She went up to his office door, stood there for couple of minutes wondering what to do, then came back. She went there again, hesitated, leaned forward to knock, made to withdraw, but had already knocked. Startled by herself, she stumbled and held the door to stop herself from falling, making some more noise in the process.

Ashutosh walked to the door on hearing the noise wondering who could be there this early in the morning. “Kaun hai?” he asked as he opened the door and found Nidhi there still disoriented due to her little accident.

“Dr. Nidhi? Aap?”

“Yes Sir… Sorry Sir…” she mumbled while smoothening her dress nervously, “Main phisal gayi…”

“Come in. Aapko chot to nahin lagi?”

“N… No Sir,” she came inside his office.

“Koi kaam tha?” he asked casually, but it made her fluster. She suddenly became conscious that she was there for no reason.

“No Sir. Koi kaan nahin tha. Main to ain-wain hi aa gayi thi… Main jaati hoon.”

“Ruko. Nidhi,” Ashutosh stopped her, “Ab tum ain-wain aa gayi ho to ain-wain ruk bhi sakti ho. Duty shuru hone mein to abhi time hai.”

Nidhi smiled nervously and nodded. Him shifting from Dr. Nidhi to Nidhi told her that this was their personal time now. On his indication she sat down on a chair and noticed that he did not sit on his chair on the other side of the table, but took another visitor chair for himself.

“Thanks for the flower-pot by the way,” he said.

“Aapko pata chal gaya tha ki maine…” she started asking and then stopped feeling foolish.

“Log kabhi ‘Get well soon’ ka bouquet to bhijwa dete hain, lekin poora plant bhijwane waale log thode kam hi hain meri zindagi mein. Aur phir…”

“Aur phir?”

“Kaka ne bataya ki koi pagal-si ladki de gayi thi. To…”

“Main aapko pagal lagti hoon?” Nidhi forgot her nervousness and pouted.

“Pagal hi ho. Warna duty se ghante bhar pahle yahan kya kar rahi ho?”

“Phir to aap bhi pagal hue. Kyonki aap bhi wahi….” she bit her lips wondering if he would get angry at that, but was pleasantly surprised to find him laughing.

“Right. Company ka asar to hota hi hai Dr. Nidhi Verma. Main bhi ho gaya hoon pagal. Lekin ye batao,” he turned serious, “Tumhein kya lagta hai, woh gulaab khilenge mere garden mein?”

“Aapka kya khayaal hai?”

“Mujhe to dar lagta hai. I may not be a great gardener.”

“Koshish karne mein kya harz hai?”

“Gulab ko chot pahunchi to? Woh murjha gaya to?”

“Ek na ek din to murjhana hi hai. Lekin jis garden mein kismat ne use bheja hai, use enjoy karne ki koshish na karna to bewkoofi hogi.”

Ashutosh smiled, “Theek hai phir. Koshish karte hain.”

Nidhi smiled happily, but they both fell silent after that. She felt that Ashutosh’s eyes were fixed on her, while she kept hers downcast. But after the while, silence made her awkward. She also wondered if Ashutosh would have some work.

“Main… chaloon?” she asked.

“Kyon chuppi se dar lagta hai?”

“Nahin,” she laughed slighlty, “Lekin aapka time barbaad ho raha hoga, mujhe laga. Aapko kaam hoga…”

“Breakfast kiya hai tumne?”

Nidhi nodded negatively.

“Maine bhi nahin kiya. Hospital ka time shuru hone se pahle kar lein?”

“Ji…”

They went to the canteen and ordered breakfast.

“Nidhi,” Ashutosh spoke after a while.

“Ji?”

“Kya ho gaya hai? Ji aur Nahin ke alaawa kuchh bol hi nahin rahi ho?”

“Ji?”

Ashutosh smirked and Nidhi hit her forehead smiling, “Aisa nahin hai. Bas… Kuchh samajh hi nahin aa raha…”

“Aakhir aisi kya baat hai jo Dr. Nidhi Verma ko samajh mein nahin aa rahi hai,” Mallika surprised them by suddently coming near their table.

Nidhi was taken aback. She hadn’t thought of Mallika and her warning since yesterday. But Ashutosh was calm. He ignored her question.

“Baitho Mallika. Tumne breakfast kiya?”

“Maine to kar liya hai Ashutosh, lekin Dr. Nidhi bhool gayi hain lagta hai. Kyon Dr. Nidhi? Cheezein bhoolne ki aapki purani aadat hai, nahin?”

“Ji?”

“Don’t worry Mallika,” Ashutosh said calmly, “Apna stethoscope nahin bhoolti hain ye aaj kal. Kyon Dr. Nidhi?”

Nidhi smiled, “Yes Sir. Sir, I am done. Main chalti hoon.”

“Yeah,” he said and nodded.

“Mallika. Chai ya coffee logi?” Ashutosh asked her after Nidhi left.

“Kuchh loongi nahin Ashutosh. Lekin ek advice doongi zaroor.”

“Kya?”

“Tumhein Dr. Nidhi ko aise sar par nahin chadhana chahiye.”

“Kya ho gaya Mallika?”

“I think she is getting wrong signals.”

“Wrong signals?”

“Yes. Ab main aur tum koi bachche nahin hai Ashutosh. Tum samajh sakte ho. Lekin Dr. Nidhi bahut young hain. Ye age bahut vulnerable hoti hai. Log aasmaan se taare todne ke sapne dekhte hain. I think she almost hero-worships you. She has a crush on you. Agar tum unke saath zyada dosti badha rahe ho to unki galti nahin hai ki she is getting the wrong signal.”

“Mallika,” Ashutosh said politely, but impatiently, “Don’t worry. She is not getting any wrong signals. Chalo. Ward mein jaane ka time ho gaya hai. Main chalta hoon.”

Although Ashutosh had rubbished Mallika’s concern before her, what she had said about hero-worshipping had stuck to his mind and refused to let him feel comfortable. Thankfully Nidhi’s duty was not with him that day, else he would have found it difficult to even work properly.

He was pacing up and down in his office when Nidhi came in the evening.

“Dr. Ashutosh?”

“Nidhi… Hi!”

“Kya hua? Koi problem hai kya?”

“Nahin to. Kyon?”

“Aap aise chahalkadmi kyon kar rahe hain?”

“Tum kab se ho yahan?”

“Zyada der se nahin, lekin aapne darwaza khulne ki bhi aawaaz nahin suni.”

“Tumhari duty khatm ho gayi?”

“Ji.”

“Tumse kuchh baat karni thi.”

“Ji. Boliye.”

“Woh…” Ashutosh started saying, then felt foolish and stopped. What would he tell her? That she should not hero-worship him? That was odd. He changed the subject and smiled, “Main ye poochh raha tha ki abhi agar free ho to kahin chalna chahogi?”

“Kahan?”

“Pata nahin. Maine socha nahin…”

“Itni chahalkadmi karne ke baad bhi socha nahin?”

“Kya?”

“Aap mujhse yahi poochhne ke liye itne pareshaan ho rahe the na?”

“Nahin to… well… Haan… Actually yahi tha. Main samajh nahin pa raha tha ki… tumhein… kahan le jaun…” Ashutosh lied.

“To mujhse poochh lete. Itna pareshaan hone ki kya zaroorat thi?”

“Right,” Ashutosh smiled foolishly, “To batao. Kahan chalna hai?”

“Aapko icre cream pasand hai?”

“Well… I don’t mind…”

“To phir hazratganj mein ek Naturals ki shop khuli hai recently. Maine bahut suna hai uske baare mein… Wahan chalein?”

“Okay. Chalo…”

The ice cream parlour was small and crowded by the school and college going youngsters.

“Wow… This is…” Ashutosh was about to say ‘bad’, but checked himself in time, “crowded…”

“Haan,” Nidhi got the drift and said, “Rahne dijiye. Kahin aur chalte hain. Yahan aage ek coffee shop bhi hai.”

But Ashutosh could see her disappointment, “Nahin. Rahne kyon dein? Aisa karte hain yahan se poora packet le lete hain aur ghar ja kar khate hain. Zyada time nahin lagega pahunchne mein…”

“Ghar?” Nidhi appeared unsure.

“Nahin… koi zaroori nahin hai. Agar tum comfortable nahin ho to hum yahin…”

“Nahin, nahin… Aisa kuchh nahin hai. Chalte hain…”

“Sure?”

“Ji.”

“Achchha batao phir, kaun sa flavour lena hai?”

“Koi bhi… aap apni pasand se le aaiye. Maine kabhi koi khayi nahin yahan ki.”

“Theek hai,” Ashutosh said and got out of the car to get the ice cream.

Kaka almost took the hint when Ashutosh brought Nidhi home. After serving them the ice cream, he said that he had to buy some grocery and went out of the house.

“Bahut achchha hai ye. Litchi flavour tha?”

“Haan. Aur ye bhi taste karo. Chiku bhi pasand hai mujhe…”

“Achchha… Dekhoon to…”

She tasted ice-cream from the other bowl and made a face, “Nooo… ye achchha nahin hai.” She looked so cute while making the face that Ashutosh just stared at her fondly.

“Kya hua?” she asked feeling conscious of his stare.

“Kuchh nahin,” he shook his head, “To tumhein chiku pasand nahin aaya?”

“Nahin… Theek hi hai,” Nidhi realized tha the had said he liked Chiku, “But litchi bahut hi achchi hai to uske aage shayad pasand nahin aaya. I’m sure dubara khaungi to achchha lagega.” She took another spoolful of ice cream in her mouth. She unconsciously made a face again, but said, “Achchha hai.”

Ashutosh could not control his laughter at that and he laughed out loud. Nidhi looked at him mesmerized.

“Pata hai,” she said, “Jab maine Kotnis join kiya tha to sab log kahte the ki aap hanste nahin hain kabhi. It was a pity kyonki aap hanste hue bahut achchhe lagte hain.”

“Aur jab tumhein koi aisi cheez khani pade jo tumhein napasand ho to, to jaise tum pout karti ho na, woh karte hue bahut achchhi lagti ho.”

“Ji?”

“Ji. Jaise ki Chiku flavour ki ice cream.”

Nidhi blushed with embarrassment.

“Lekin Nidhi,” Ashutosh turned serious, “Tumhein mere liye kuchh aisa karne ki zaroorat bilkul nahin hai, jo tumhein pasand na ho. Ice cream ka flavour to chhoti si baat thi. Lekin kuchh aur ho tab bhi… Main is relationship se ye bilkul nahin chahta. Tum samajh rahi ho na?”

“Aap itna pareshaan mat hoiye. Aapne kah diya, to samajh lijiye main maan liya.”

Ashutosh smiled uncomfortably, “Main koi hero nahin hoon Nidhi.” He used the word that was clouding his mind the entire day.

“Mere liye to hain. Aur jo abhi aapne kaha usse to definitely ban gaye hain,” Nidhi replied with a confident smile making Ashutosh fidget. Was it all a mistake? Then he looked at her smiling face and could not help smiling back at her.

“Dr. Ashutosh!”

“Hmm?”

“Aapne mujhe kabhi bataya nahin ki aapke Baba ki woh kaun si nishani hai jise aap wapas paana chahte hain.”

“Jab mil jayegi tab bata doonga.”

“Nahin. Mujhe abhi janana hai.”

“Kyon?”

“Kyonki woh aapke liye itni important hai.”

Ashutosh looked at her for a moment and then said, “Theek hai. Chalo. Dikha deta hoon tumhein.”

“Lekin kaise dikhayenge? Woh to aapke paas nahin hai na…”

“Khushkismati kaho ya badkismati, lekin mere paas nahin hote hue bhi main use dekh sakta hoon. Aur jinhein woh diya gaya hai unke haathon uski halat dekh kar apna khoon bhi jalata rahta hoon.”

“I am sorry.”

“Uski zaroorat nahin hai. Chalo, abhi chalogi?”

“Ji,” Nidhi almost leapt out of the chair she was sitting on.

As the car left the city crowd behind and went forward on Rai Bareilly road, Nidhi felt uneasy. But Ashutosh did not notice it. He was excited at the prospect of showing it to Nidhi, of sharing what was closest to his heart with her.

Nidhi knew he wasn’t going to tell her what this thing was. So, she asked something else.

“Baba woh nishani aapko na dekar, kisse de gaye the?”

“Apni naatin ko. Jisse woh zindagi mein kabhi mile bhi nahin the.”

Nidhi felt like she would faint. She stayed silent. This time Ashutosh noticed her discomfort.

“Kya hua Nidhi?” he asked.

“Kuchh nahin,” she replied forcing a smile on her face, desperately clinging to a hope that it wasn’t what she was thinking about.

“Aapne kabhi us ladki se milne ki koshish ki? Ise wapas lene ke liye?”

“Main kyon milta usse?” Ashutosh was agitated, “Main usse nafrat karta hoon Nidhi. Itni nafrat kissi ne aaj tak kissi se nahin ki hogi. Woh mere aur Baba ke beech mein aa gayi.”

Nidhi’s heart sank. But she tried to make a case, “Lekin usmein uski kya galti thi? Aapke Baba apni marzi se…”

“Uska hona hi uski sabse badi galti hai. Mujhe gussa mat dialo ye ulte-seedhe sawaal kar ke…” Ashutosh was boiling in anger.

“I am sorry,” Nidhi said meekly.

He realized his folly and smiled, “No. I am sorry. Main tum par kyon gussa ho raha hoon. Bas paanch minute aur hum pahunch jaayenge wahan…”

All her hopes went down the drain, when the car stopped in front of the house. Ashutosh undid his seat-belt excitedly and made to open the car door, when he noticed that Nidhi wasn’t moving at all.

“Kya hua? Bahar to niklo,” he said.

“Ye ghar aapke Baba ki nishani hai?” Nidhi asked somberly.

“Haan,” Ashutosh replied with a softness in his voice that was quite unusual for him.

“Ye ghar… mere Nana apni will mein mere naam kar gaye the. Sanjivini ji shayad aapki lawyer hain,” she said without looking at him.

Ashutosh was devastated. “Tum… Tum mazaak kar rahi ho?” he managed to ask.

She nodded his head in negative. He put his seatbelt back on and started driving back. His rash driving and angry countenance told Nidhi everything. There was no question of reconcilliation. His hatred was bigger than his love.

As Ashutosh walked back into his house, his eyes fell on the rose plant in the garden. It was flourishing in the same pot in which it had arrived. Kaka had been true to his promise of taking care of it. But that plant no longer evoked the feeling of love in Ashutosh’ heart. It only evoked anger, sense of betrayal and hatred. He picked up the pot and threw it with force in anger. The mud pot broke and some of the flowers and the leaves were crushed. Ashutosh stepped on it to cause it even more harm and walked in.

Kaka was in his room and didn’t notice him coming. He walked to the kitchen to get some water from the refrigerator. Something made him open the freezer compartment. Some leftover Naturals icecream was kept there in a box. He took it out and threw it is the dust-bin. He took out a water bottle next, but instead of drinking it, he poured it over his face and hair. His anger was burning him, almost literally.

He, then, walked to his room and locked it. He threw his coat on the floor in anger and broke down.

“Kyon? Kyon aisa hota hai mere saath,” he cried out loud, “Kya koi rishta bina meri zindagi ka kaanta bane nahin rah sakta? Kya koi rishta mujhe dhokha diye bina, chot pahunchaye bina nahin mil sakta? Kyon? Nidhi hi kyon?”

Nidhi threw herself on the bed after reaching her room and cried piteously. She felt miserable. Then her sense of misery started changing into anger. What did it mean for him to be angry at her? To be hating her? What was her fault? Then even her anger subsided. And she felt the pain. Pain of a young boy crying in an orphanage, scared of his loneliness, hoping against hope for rescue, warmth… And her eyes filled with tears again. This time not for herself.

She called up Dr. Rangnath and took leave for the next day. She drove to the house early in the morning and spent time till late afternoon in cleaning it up to the extent she could.Exhausted she took a shower and then called Ashutosh. He did not pick up the call. Disapointed she left the house and drove to his house.

When Ashutosh entered the house in the evening, he saw a bunch of papers kept on the dining table. Kaka was not around. He picked them up out of curiosity. He knew the handwriting on the note kept on top of the papers.

“Ghar ke papers hain. Main Sanjivani ji se baat kar loongi taaki woh transfer ki formalities poori kar dein. Agar mujhe pata hota ki woh ghar kissi ke liye itna maayne rakhta hai to maine ye kaam bahut pahle kar diya hota. Kaash aapne ek baar baat karne ki koshish ki hoti. Shayad maafi maangne ka haq aap mujhe denge nahin, lekin phir bhi. I am sorry!”

Ashutosh slumped on one of the chairs! He had to admit to himself that he had missed her badly in the hospital. Rangnath could not tell him why she had taken the leave and he had been worried and restless. Was she all right? She had looked terrible yesterday when he had dropped her at home.

And amending the relationship was that simple… Could he try now? But he recalled their conversation from yesterday…

“Aapne kabhi us ladki se milne ki koshish ki? Ise wapas lene ke liye?”

“Main kyon milta usse? Main usse nafrat karta hoon Nidhi. Itni nafrat kissi ne aaj tak kissi se nahin ki hogi. Woh mere aur Baba ke beech mein aa gayi.”

“Lekin usmein uski kya galti thi? Aapke Baba apni marzi se…”

“Uska hona hi uski sabse badi galti hai.”

He had acted most immaturely. Her hero had fallen from the pedastal. Even if he went ahead and apologized, she won’t be able to accept him again, ever! And this time, he could not blame the fate. It was his own doing.

He got up from the chair and picked up the papers. The house keys were also lying near the papers. He picked them up too and walked out. He got into the car and almost absentmindedly drove to the house. His reverie was broken after he stepped inside the house and looked around. The interiors had been cleaned and furniture placed properly. Is that what she was doing the entire day? Tears came to his eyes and he sunk down on the floor.

What had he done?

“Dr. Rangnath. Main ek saal ke sabbatical ke liye apply kar raha hoon. Jaldi hi approve ho jayega. Dr. Mallika will be the in-charge of the ward. But the ward will need one more doctor. So, you should start looking for that…”

“Sure Sir. Lekin aap sabbatical…”

“I will see you later,” Ashutosh said sharply and turned to leave avoiding Rangnath’s obvious question. But he ran into Nidhi who was standing at the door looking quite stunned. She had overheard their conversation.

Ashutosh looked unsettled for a moment on seeing Nidhi. But he immediately put his mask back and said, “Dr. Nidhi. Please see me in my office.”

Nidhi and Rangnath stared at each other after Ashutosh left.

“Dr. Nidhi. Ye Dr. Ashutosh achanak sabbatical par kyon ja rahe hain. Koi problem hai?”

“Mu… mujhe kya pata,” Nidhi lied unconvincingly, then handed the papers she had brought for Rangnath and left the office absentmindedly.

“Aapne mujhe bulaya tha Dr. Ashutosh?” she entered his room feeling uncomfortable and nervous.

“Yes. Ye aap rakh lijiye. Inki zaroorat nahin hai,” he handed her the house papers back, “Sanjivini Ji ne mujhe phone kiya tha. Main unhein bhi bol diya hai…”

“Zaroorat to hai na Dr. Ashutosh. Is ghar ki wajah se aapne itne saal dard aur kadwahat mein guzaare hain. To ab jab ye aapko mil gaya hai to ise chhod kar kyon ja rahe hain aap? Sabbatical par kyon ja rahe hain?”

“Kuchh cheezein main deserve nahin karta Nidhi,” Ashutosh said sadly, “Mera chale jaana hi achchha hai.”

“Paheliyan kyon bujha rahe hain aap? Aise kaise sab kuchh chhod kar ja sakte hain aap? Aap itne irresponsible kaise ho sakte hain?”

“Nidhi. Ye ghar to tum mujhe de dogi. Lekin jo tanhaaiyan maine khud apne liye paida ki hain, unke saath main is ghar ka karoonga kya? Apne andhe gusse aur nafrat mein maine jo tumhare saath kiya, uske baad… main tumhara hero to nahin rah gaya na, Nidhi? Jis pedastal par tumne mujhe bitha rakha tha, wahan se to main gir gaya. Tumhein to maine kho diya… Phir…”

“Aap samajhte kya hain apne aap ko? Bhagwaan hain aap? Ki mere man ki baat khud-ba-khud jaan lenge?” Nidhi was furious, “Aur aapko lagta hai ki main aapko perfect insaan samajhti rahi hoon ab tak? Hero-worshipping karti rahi hoon? For God’s sake Dr. Ashutosh. I know you too well to do that. Jab mujhe nahin bhi pata tha ki aapke Baba ki nishaani kya hai, tab bhi mujhe ye rational nahin lagta tha ki us ek cheez ke around aapki poori life ghoomne lage, aap logon par, rishton par bharosa karna chhod dein, apni professional life mein itne sakht ho jayen ki log aapse darne lagein… No. Dr. Ashutosh. You were never perfect. But what I do know is that nobody is perfect. Maine aapki achchhaiyan dekhi Dr. Ashutosh, aur kamiyon ko accept kiya, samajhne ki koshish ki. Jaisa ki, at least mujhe laga tha, aapne mere liye kiya tha. Lekin… Khair rahne dijiye. Aapko kuchh batane ka fayda kya hai? Aapke liye to bas aapka apna faisla sabse zaroori hota hai na. Kissi se baat karna, kissi ki rai jaanana to aapne seekha hi nahin hai. To theek hai. Lijiye apne faisle. Jee lijiye apni zindagi. Main aapko disturb karne ab nahin aaungi. And for God’s sake, ye ghar, jismein itni nafrat bhari hai, mujhe nahin chahiye.”

She walked out in anger.

Ashutosh was too stunned to react for a while. Then he came to his senses and ran out. She was in the ward taking rounds. He went in. She pretended not to notice him. He felt foolish and could not think of a way of interacting with her. So, he came out.

She did not realize that he had seen her going to the common room after her rounds. He followed.

“Nidhi. Tumse baat karni hai.”

“Mujhe aapse koi baat nahin karni hai.”

“Please ek baar…”

She looked at him in anger and ran away from there. He saw her going to the terrace and awkward as it was, he still followed her.

“Kya chahte hain aap? Aapne mujhe sufficiently hurt kar diya hai Dr. Ashutosh. Aur kuchh sunne ki himmat nahin hai mujh mein.”

“Main… main… I have been an idiot Nidhi. Lekin please mujhe ek mauka do. Please. Jaise itni kamiyaan accept ki hain tumne meri, please ye ek galti bhi accept kar lo.”

“Main itni resilient nahin hoon, Dr. Ashutosh. Baar-baar distrust aur…” She fell speechless as she saw what Ashutosh did next. He fell down on his knees in front of her.

She instinctively stepped back, “Ye aap kya kar rahe hain?”

“Tumhein mujhe jo sazaa deni hai do Nidhi, mujhe jaise test karna hai karo, lekin jin andheron se tumne mujhe nikala hai, please unmein wapas mat dhakelo. Mujhe ek mauka do Nidhi…” He started folding his hands in desperation.

Nidhi also dropped down in front of him and stopped him by holding his hands.

“Don’t do this, please,” she was in tears.

“Meri udaasi aur akelepan ke liye meri insecurities zimmedaar thi Nidhi. Meri kismat nahin. Aur ek baar phir apni insecurities ke wash mein aa kar, maine apni zindagi ka sabse khoobsoorat tohfa khone waala hoon. Use bacha lo, Nidhi. Please. Tumhare alaawa koi meri zindagi ke andhere ko roshni mein nahin badal sakta.”

“Ab aap mujhe pedastal par chadha hain,” Nidhi smiled through her tears.

“Main sirf sach bol raha hoon.”

They got up and hugged each other.

“Ashutosh!” Mallika’s voice brought them back to the reality and they hastily separated. Nidhi was embarrassed and uncomfortable. She looked at Ashutosh. He indicated silently for her to go away. She did that.

“Ye kya ho raha tha Ashutosh? Tum…”

“Tumhara andaaza sahi tha Mallika. Main aur Nidhi ek-doosre se pyaar karte hain. Despite all the odds, despite everything that may not look right to others. Lekin tumhara doosra assertion galat tha. She does not hero-worship me. In fact, she understands my problems, my weaknesses more than anyone else. You don’t need to worry about me.”

He walked past her to go back to his office and withdraw his sabbatical application.

– The End –
